Donna Brazile Doesn't Know Why Her Health Insurance Premium ...

RUSH: Donna Brazile tweeted that her insurance premium went up and she doesn't know why, and I am not kidding.? I literally am not kidding.? Donna Brazile, a tweet, "What's on your menu?? I just got off the phone with my health care provider asking them to explain why my premium jumped up.? No good answer."?

Now, for those of you who do not know who Donna Brazile is (and there may well indeed be many of you who don't), Donna Brazile is a Democrat campaign specialist. She is one of the ranking unelected Democrats in the country. She ran Algore's presidential campaign. She was as close to Bill Clinton as you can get without being Monica Lewinsky. I mean, she is a ranking, powerful Democrat. She is constantly on CNN and other networks doing commentary and strategic analysis for the Democrat Party. She actually tweeted, "Just got off the phone with my health care provider asking them to explain why my premium jumped up. No good answer."

original

Now, a couple of things stand out. First, is it possible...? I'm just asking. Is it possible she's not aware of Obamacare? No, it's not possible. Second, why is she calling her health care provider asking them about her health insurance? She said she called her "health care provider" asking them to explain why her premium jumped up. The "health care provider" is the doctor. What does the doctor have to do with an insurance premium? Now, maybe when she wrote this, by "provider" she means insurance company. I'm sure she does. But stop and think of that!

Here's this high-ranking Democrat who thinks her "health care provider" is her insurance company. I guess, in one way of looking at it, that may be true. But beyond that, somebody said, "Well, maybe she doesn't know about Obamacare." No, no, no, no. She knows everything about Obamacare. The thing that we must ask is: Does she really believe the crap that was said about it? You mean to tell me that Donna Brazile bought the idea that her premium would be reduced $2500 because of Obamacare? You mean to tell me that?

There has to be some explanation for this. It could well be that this is a tweet that's just designed to stir people up like me. Could be she's out there playing a game, knowing full well that people like me are going to do what I'm doing right now in reacting to it. Donna, call your insurance company or whoever provides you your insurance, your CNN employment plan, whatever. I don't know where you get your insurance, but call them. The doctor doesn't have anything to do with your premium. But actually, Donna, what you ought to do is call the White House and ask to speak to the president and ask him why your premium went up, 'cause he's the reason.

There's a piece of legislation out there called Obamacare, and everybody's premiums, costs, are going up. I can't believe it. See, for me, this is the dividing line. Does she really think health care is gonna get cheaper because of Obamacare? That's what these Democrats actually believe? I've thought all along they know they're lying through their teeth to us when they tell us costs are gonna go down. There is one government-provided entitlement that has ever reduced the cost of anything, and that's all this is: A government entitlement program. There isn't one government program that's ever reduced the cost of anything.

Maybe these people are living in their dreamland and actually thought that this was gonna lower their premiums. I'm having a tough time believing that.

South Carolina Car Insurance | Car Insurance Quotes

If you are a male driver looking for cheap South Carolina Car Insurance, then simply enter your zip code above. Our website can help you by providing a list of insurance quotes. With the car insurance quotes presented, finding the insurance provider is a lot easier.

We are all aware that male drivers are more expensive to insure than women. A male driver in the early 20s and not more than 25 years old are more expensive to insure. This is because according to statistics, men are usually more involved to accidents. Along with this, male drivers are usually ticketed for violating road rules such as driving under the influence of alcohol, while using their phone, and the like. Driving while there is any distraction can lead to serious collision and this undoubtedly is a grave offense. But why are men higher risk drivers than women?

This can be an issue that involves their testosterone. They easily get aggressive once in a particular driving situation unlike women. This usually happens to younger male drivers. They often get involve to road rage, and when accompanied by attacks of ego, they are influenced to race other cars and disobey traffic rules.

Higher insurance premium are given to those who are less than 25 years old, regardless of gender. Because young drivers have less experience, they are usually involved to accidents on the road. And since they are high risk drivers, they are charged with higher premiums. What more if you are a male driver less than 25? What can you do to lower the premium cost?

First thing that matters is the type of car you are driving. The more expensive your car is, the more it will cost you on auto insurance. This is because when you are driving an expensive car and you get into trouble, cost of the repairs and replacements to be shouldered by the insurance company is undoubtedly huge. So if you are a driver less than 25, it will be best to get an inexpensive vehicle. Don?t drive sports car as they are fast and more prone to accidents. Luxury cars, on the other hand, are attractive to thieves and can also increase the premium.

Another factor that can help lower your premium is to modify your car with safety devices instead of other enhancements. The better your security systems are, the lower will you get your premium. Car enhancements will only increase the value of your vehicle. Therefore, your premium, again, will go higher.

Lastly, you have to maintain a clean driving history. Because if not, you will carry this all along, every time you need to purchase a policy.

California: County Supervisors Committee Sends Anti-Gun Proposed Ordinances to the Full Board for Consideration

Unfortunately, members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisor's City Operations and Neighborhood Services Committee do not seem to understand that it is not law-abiding gun owners who are the cause of violent crime.?? They?apparently?believe that if they impose further restrictions on current legally owned products then they will reduce violent crime where current?gun control laws have utterly failed.? Criminals do not respect current gun laws, so why should anyone expect criminals to obey new gun laws?

On Wednesday, the San Francisco Board of Supervisor's City Operations and Neighborhood Services Committee approved two anti-gun ordinances to now be heard by the full County Board of Supervisors.?? As of this writing, these two onerous ordinances were not on the schedule for the Tuesday, February 26 Board meeting.? However, it would not be surprising for that to change, so please be prepared to attend the February 26 board meeting at 2:00 pm.? Usually, the County Supervisors meet every Tuesday at City Hall in room 250 at 2:00 pm.

File 130040 bans "the possession and sale of certain ammunition, including black talon ammunition and ammunition intended exclusively for law enforcement and military purposes."? San Francisco law already prohibits the sale of the ammunition listed in File 130040.? Unfortunately, this proposed ordinance would take that law a step further and ban the possession of these types of ammunition.? This?proposal?will only make criminals out of law-abiding citizens and do nothing to stop the criminal activities of others.

File 130039 requires the reporting of ammunition sales of 500 or more rounds.? This ordinance will also do nothing to stop criminal activities.? These reports will only have information on law-abiding competitive and recreational shooters, because they would be the only individuals who regularly buy ammunition in bulk to save money on the large quantities of ammunition they need to improve and maintain their skills.

If enacted these egregious ordinances will only result in innocent law-abiding citizens paying the price for the criminal activities of others.

It is critical that you call AND e-mail county?Supervisors TODAY and urge them to OPPOSE these useless anti-gun ordinances.?? Ask them to instead focus on meaningful measures relating to school safety, mental health issues, marketing of violence?as entertainment?for?our children and the collapse of federal prosecutions of violent criminals.? Don't forget to forward this alert to your family, friends and fellow gun owners in San Francisco County and urge them to do the same.

Please continue to check your e-mail and www.NRAILA.org for updates on this important issue.

2013 World Baseball Classic Uniforms: Japan

Japan pulled a fast one about two weeks ago and updated the font on one of their uniforms. Here?s what the set looks like:

Surprisingly, there is no hat released for Japan but I saw one mock up that has the hat looking like the white jersey font with the colors on the blue jersey. The ?fast one? I?referred?to early comes from the Japanese T-shirts that have the blue jersey color schemes also with the white jersey type face. I guess we?ll find out next week.

Four Steps Toward Reducing IT Complexity And Improving Strategy ...

Four stepsMany CIOs are caught in the middle ? stuck between competing demands from the CFO to reduce costs and from the CEO to increase innovation. In fact this is a topic which often comes up in our strategic planning workshops with clients.

The challenge is to find a means to achieve both goals simultaneously. Here are?four steps you can take to achieve just that.

1. Get agreement on your business capabilities.

Business capability maps are a great way to gain clarity on what's important to your business. A good business capability map for strategy work is one which is organizationally agnostic; i.e., when you look at the boxes on the map, you don't see department names. The reason this is important is that you don't want to put anyone in the position of having to defend "their box" on the capability map. By the way, this is much harder to achieve than you might think! Once you have a draft map, you can?share it with business leaders to get their input. This is an important step, as the capability map must be owned by all business leaders ? the process of refining the map encourages leaders to take ownership.

  • Tip: Remember, not all your capabilities are inside your organization. Many firms leverage business partners to deliver key capabilities. For example, some firms will use FedEx or UPS to provide their distribution capabilities.

2. Identify your strategic capabilities.

Every organization has strategic capabilities. In a for-profit business, these are the three or four business capabilities which differentiate the organization in the marketplace. These capabilities are the ones the company uses most effectively to compete. Apple will define its strategic capabilities very differently from Wal-Mart. At Apple, the strategic capabilities could be "design," "customer experience" and "innovation" ? the means by which Apple commands intense brand loyalty and the ability to charge premium prices for its products and services; whereas at Wal-Mart, the strategic capabilities might be "vendor management" and "distribution" ? the means by which it is able to achieve "always low prices" and maintain its position as the lowest-price retailer. (You may decide for yourselves what you think the actual strategic capabilities are for these companies ? I use these for illustration purposes only.) You need to get agreement among your leadership team on which of your capabilities are truly strategic.

  • Tip: One challenge you will face is a tendency for people to want to describe everything as strategic. While all capabilities are important ? you can't remove them and have the business survive ? they are most certainly not all strategic. You need to try to limit the number of strategic capabilities to two, three or maybe four. What really is different from everyone else in the market?

3. Focus on developing strategic capabilities.

Once you have narrowed down your strategic capabilities, you can begin to explore how to enhance these capabilities in particular to get to your business goals. By definition, you are most likely to have an impact on business outcomes by changing these strategic capabilities. That doesn't mean you should ignore generic capabilities; it just means the early focus is on the strategic. Sometimes you can make great progress toward goals by fixing defective generic capabilities, so you always need to assess how well all your capabilities are meeting the needs of the business.

  • Tip: If you failed to make your capability map organizationally agnostic, you will see executives tending toward wanting to make "their capabilities" strategic as this reinforces their importance in the organization. Make sure your defined capabilities span multiple departments.

4. Simplify generic capabilities.

By definition, everything which is not strategic is generic. Your organization shares these generic capabilities with many of your competitors; these capabilities are not the reason a customer will choose your brand over your competitor's. Because these capabilities are generic, most executives immediately see that, in a zero-sum game (which is what IT investing is), it is better to place investments in support of strategic capabilities and at the same time, simplify the underlying technology behind the generic capabilities. This is a big deal because now you have the basis for rationalization and commoditization of technology services in support of generic capabilities. These capabilities can be more easily supported by cloud-based services which are not heavily customized by IT. By reducing the complexity behind generic services, IT is able to free up more investment for innovation in strategic capabilities.

  • Tip: The trade-off between strategic and generic capabilities is an important one. Too many strategic capabilities and you are back to square one, with no ability to differentiate what's important from what's generic. Over years of growth, organizations take on more and more capabilities as a means to reduce costs. The downside of this expansion in capability is the increasing complexity of the technology underpinning the enterprise. Over time the cost of maintaining the technology, and the inertia it creates in the organization, costs more than the company saves by having a highly tailored capability. Remember KISS ? if it's not differentiating, keep it simple, stupid.

These design principles come from work with many firms in developing strategic planning for technology and are covered in more depth in our strategic planning workshops. (If you are interested in attending one the upcoming workshops on BT strategic planning in New York or San Francisco, you can find info using these links: [March 12 NYC] [March 13 NYC] [April 23 San Fran] [April 24 San Fran]).

Asian markets decline on Europe concerns

BEIJING (AP) ? Asian stock markets fell Friday following weak economic data from Europe and moves by China's government to cool inflation pressures.

Oil rose to just above $93 a barrel despite Wall Street's overnight decline and higher U.S. jobless numbers.

The Asian heavyweight, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index, fell 0.5 percent to 11,252.41 while in the region's biggest economy, China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index shed 0.1 percent to 2,323.72. Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore and Taipei also suffered declines.

Australia was the region's only major gainer, with the ASX/S&P 200 rising 1.1 percent to 5,033.50, recovering from Thursday's 2.3 percent plunge.

The Shanghai index slid 3 percent Thursday for its biggest decline in 15 months after Beijing announced new measures to cool politically sensitive housing costs. Also this week, the central bank drained liquidity from markets in a sign it is trying to restrain pressure for prices to rise as the economy gradually recovers.

"Policy will try to sharply slow availability of funds in the economy," said Credit Agricole CIB economist Dariusz Kowalczyk in a report.

Asian markets followed European bourses down after weaker-than-expected industrial data from heavyweight economies France and Germany. France's CAC-40 tumbled 2.3 percent on Thursday and markets in Germany, Britain and Italy suffered marked declines.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.7 percent to 22,746.37, Seoul's Kospi was off 0.2 percent at 2,010.81 and Taipei's Taiex lost 0.4 percent to 7,921.08. Singapore fell 0.3 percent.

U.S. markets were rattled by Wednesday's release of notes from the Fed's last policy meeting that suggested some policymakers were worried about the cost of its monetary stimulus.

That sparked concern the Fed might wind down asset purchases, though some analysts suggested such fears were overblown.

On Thursday, the Labor Department reported the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits rose 20,000 last week to 362,000 but said longer-term, the job market appears to be improving.

The Dow Jones industrial average declined 0.5 percent and the broader S&P 500 index fell 0.6 percent.

The benchmark price of crude for April delivery was up 36 cents to $93.20 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $2.24, or 2.4 percent, to $92.98 on Thursday, the second drop of 2 percent in two days.

In currency markets, the dollar fell to 93.15 yen from 93.26 yen late Thursday. The euro was up slightly at $1.320.

Wall Street ends lower on growth worries

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell for a second straight day on Thursday and the S&P 500 posted its worst two-day loss since November after reports cast doubt over the health of the U.S. and euro-zone economies.

But a late-day rally helped stocks erase some of their losses with most of the pullback concentrated in the technology- heavy Nasdaq. The move suggested investors were still willing to buy on dips even after the sharp losses in the last session.

In Europe, business activity indexes dealt a blow to hopes that the euro zone might emerge from recession soon, showing the downturn across the region's businesses unexpectedly grew worse this month.

"The PMI numbers out of Europe were really a blow to the market," said Jack De Gan, chief investment officer at Harbor Advisory in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. "The market was expecting signs that recovery is still there, but the numbers just highlighted that the euro-zone problem is still persistent."

U.S. initial claims for unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week while the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia said its index of business conditions in the U.S. mid-Atlantic region fell in February to the lowest in eight months.

Gains in Wal-Mart Stores Inc shares helped cushion the Dow. The shares gained 1.5 percent to $70.26 after the world's largest retailer reported earnings that beat expectations, though early February sales were sluggish.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> fell 46.92 points, or 0.34 percent, to 13,880.62 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> lost 9.53 points, or 0.63 percent, to 1,502.42. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> dropped 32.92 points, or 1.04 percent, to close at 3,131.49.

The two-day decline marked the U.S. stock market's first sustained pullback this year. The Standard & Poor's 500 has fallen 1.8 percent over the period and just managed to hold the 1,500 level on Thursday. Still, the index is up 5.3 percent so far this year.

The abrupt reversal in markets, which started on Wednesday after minutes from the Federal Reserve's January meeting suggested stimulus measures may end earlier than thought, looks set to halt a seven-week winning streak for stocks that had lifted the Dow and the S&P 500 close to all-time highs.

Wall Street will soon face another test with the upcoming debate in Washington over the automatic across-the-board spending cuts put in place as part of a larger congressional budget fight. Those cuts, set to kick in on March 1 unless lawmakers agree on an alternative, could depress the economy.

Semiconductor stocks ranked among the weakest of the day, pressuring the Nasdaq as the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index <.sox> fell 1.8 percent. Intel Corp fell 2.3 percent to $20.25 while Advanced Micro Devices lost 3.7 percent to $2.60 as the S&P 500's biggest percentage decliner.

The Dow also got a helping hand from personal computer maker Hewlett-Packard Co , which rose 2.3 percent to end the regular session at $17.10. The company was scheduled due to report first-quarter results after the closing bell.

Shares of Boeing Co rose 1.6 percent to $76.01 as a senior executive was set to meet with the head of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on Friday and present a series of measures to prevent battery failures that grounded its 787 Dreamliner fleet, according to a source familiar with the plans.

In other company news, shares of supermarket operator Safeway Inc jumped 14.1 percent to $22.97 after the company reported earnings that beat expectations.

Shares of VeriFone Systems Inc tumbled nearly 43 percent to $18.24 after the credit-card swipe machine maker forecast first- and second-quarter profits well below expectations.

Of the 427 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported results so far, 69.3 percent have exceeded analysts' expectations, compared with a 62 percent average since 1994 and 65 percent over the past four quarters, according to Thomson Reuters data through Thursday morning.

Fourth-quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies are estimated to have risen 5.9 percent, according to the data, above a 1.9 percent forecast at the start of the earnings season.

Berry Petroleum Co jumped 19.3 percent to $46.02 after oil and gas producer Linn Energy LLC said it would buy the company in an all-stock deal valued at $4.3 billion, including debt. Linn Energy shares advanced 2.8 percent to $37.68.

About two stocks fell for everyone that rose on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq. About 7.64 billion shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and NYSE MKT, well above the 20-day moving average of around 6.6 billion shares.

Cuban dissident blogger met by small protests in Brazil

RECIFE, Brazil (Reuters) - Cuba's best-known dissident, blogger Yoani Sanchez, was greeted on Monday by a small group of protesters calling her a CIA agent upon arriving in Brazil, the first stop on a whirlwind tour that will take her to a dozen countries.

A smiling Sanchez brushed off the student demonstrators who sympathize with Cuba's communist government, saying she wished Cubans had the same freedom to protest back home. Sanchez's arrival in Brazil kicked off her first trip abroad since the Cuban government finally granted her a passport after more than 20 refusals in the past five years.

The protesters, about eight leftist students from a local university, shouted "Sell out" and "CIA agent" as Sanchez arrived in the northeastern Brazilian city of Recife, according to a Reuters photographer who was at the airport.

"Viva la democracia! I want that democracy for my country too," she responded.

The Cuban government labels dissidents as mercenaries on the payroll of the United States, its decades-old ideological foe. Sanchez, a 37-year-old Havana resident, has incurred the wrath of Cuba's government for constantly criticizing its communist system in her "Generation Y" blog, www.desdecuba.com/generaciony, and using Twitter to denounce repression.

Sanchez, who was starting an 80-day tour, was granted a passport two weeks ago under Cuba's sweeping immigration reform that went into effect this year. She has won several international prizes for her blogging about life in Cuba but has been unable to collect them until now.

"I am so happy. It has been five years of struggle," Sanchez told local media.

"Unfortunately, in Cuba you are punished for thinking differently. Opinions against the government have terrible consequences, arbitrary arrests, surveillance," she said in an interview with GloboNews television.

Sanchez's visit touched a political nerve in Brazil, where the left-leaning government of President Dilma Rousseff is often criticized for not taking a more critical stance with Cuba's one-party system and the repression of political dissent there.

According to local news magazine Veja, Cuban diplomats recently met with militants from Brazil's ruling Workers' Party in Brasilia and asked them to organize protests against Sanchez during her stay in the South American country. One junior official in the Rousseff administration was present at the meeting, Veja said.

The report prompted some opposition legislators in Congress to accuse the Rousseff government of tacitly endorsing a Cuban-led smear campaign against Sanchez. One senator, Alvaro Dias, said he would demand that the government formally explain its role in what he called the "unacceptable monitoring" of Sanchez.

In the interview with GloboNews, Sanchez said recent reforms undertaken by President Raul Castro have been positive but minimal, such as the lifting of bans that prevented Cubans from buying new cars and other goods.

"There is a difference between the reforms we dream of and the reforms that are being carried out," she said. "We dream of freedom of association, freedom of expression, but it does not look like we will get this too soon."

Sanchez, considered Cuba's pioneer in social networking, told Reuters earlier this week in Havana that she planned to travel to Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, and visit the headquarters of Google, Twitter and Facebook in the United States.

Damascus Holds Its Breath as Syrian Civil War Reaches Its Door

ABC News' Terry Moran and his team take a rare and dangerous journey into the embattled capital of Damascus for the special report : Inside Syria: The Battle for Damascus.

Damascus is quiet tonight - too quiet.

We arrived a few hours ago in this tense and troubled city - 5 million people hunkered down as the terrible war that is tearing this country apart has now arrived in major battles raging in the suburbs.

This war is far from over - and it is far from clear who will win - but we already know who the losers are: the people of this ancient land.

From Beirut, Lebanon, we drove into Syria along a heavily guarded route, passing checkpoint after checkpoint after checkpoint.

It is now a lifeline as Damascus - the stronghold of the government of President Bashar Assad - becomes a city under siege.

Tonight, just a few miles from here, the war raged on.

It is a dirty war, in a crucial country.

The chaos engulfing Syria threatens to spill over into Iraq on one side, and Israel and Lebanon on the other. That is a nightmare scenario for the U.S.

The United Nations now estimates that 70,000 people have been killed in the fighting - but no one really knows.

A U.N. commission today called for war-crimes investigations of both sides: Assad's government, which has sought to crush the rebellion by any means necessary; as well as the rebels, many of whom are increasingly seen by ordinary Syrians as warlords, gangsters and religious fanatics who regularly post videos of beheadings and other atrocities on YouTube.

Syria's many minorities live in terror of a jihadist takeover of their country.

Before we came here, we visited Christian refugees from Syria who had fled to Beirut.

They said they'd been forced out of their villages by Muslim fundamentalists - ethnically cleansed. They'd supported the rebellion at first, but not now. They have lost their homes, their communities, their way of life.

"We lived freely as Christians," said one man, putting up Christmas trees and decorations. "But now we are being targeted."

It is a dirty war with no end in sight.

We have come to this country with the permission of the government, which wants the other side of the story here told.

There is no doubt the rebellion has changed.

Ordinary Syrians increasingly just want the war to stop and now dread the chaos that has been unleashed.

Assad himself seems to know this. The man that the U.S. government has said must go told a group of visitors today: "We are sure we will win."

Egypt's political rivals meet amid tension

CAIRO (Reuters) - Liberal and Islamist political leaders met privately on Saturday to try to ease tensions that have sparked protests in which some 60 Egyptians have died since late January, politicians said.

The protests erupted after the second anniversary of the uprising which overthrew Hosni Mubarak and reflected competing visions for Egypt's future. Political turbulence has slowed negotiations for a $4.8 billion dollar loan from the International Monetary Fund.

Politicians said Mohamed ElBaradei, a prominent liberal activist and leader of the National Salvation Front (NSF), met Saad el-Katatni, head of the Muslim Brotherhood's ruling Freedom and Justice Party (FJP). Another leader of the NSF, Sayed el-Badawi, also took part in the talks.

Previously the NSF had boycotted the idea of talks with President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood, who has been the target of protester rage in weeks of violent demonstrations.

Sulley Ali Muniru will succeed at CFR Cluj - Coach

Liberty Professionals head coach George Lamptey is tipping Sulley Ali Muniru, younger brother of Black Stars' midfielder Sulley Muntari to do well at his new club CFR Cluj.

The 18-year-old joined the Romanian side from Liberty Professionals during the January transfer window.

Ali Muniru has been included in Cluj's squad that will play against Inter Milan later today in the UEFA Europa league in Italy.

George Lamptey, who is head coach of Liberty Professionals has worked with the player for about eight, starting from the Liberty Youth Academy to the senior level.

The coach is excited about the Muniru's progress and believes the youngster has all it takes to succeed at his new club CFR Cluj.

?I am more than excited. This is something I've been wishing for in a long time. Sariki (Muniru) should have been there a long time ago but he had some minor injury issues. After his full recovery, we had no doubt he was going to make it this far. The boy has everything, you can use him as a holding midfielder, as an offensive midfielder, he is a double-footed player as well. He can jump very well, his game intelligence is very high. We have every belief that come what may, Muniru is going succeed at CFR Cluj.?

Colorado Seeks to Increase Higher Education Opportunities for Undocumented Immigrants

COMMENTARY | Colorado Democrats are seeking to pass a bill to lower tuition rates for undocumented immigrants who reside here. In the past, they've had to pay three times the resident rate, the same as out-of-state residents. Proponents want find an equitable and fair way for undocumented immigrants who grew up here to pursue higher education because they believe all students in Colorado deserve a fair shot at higher education. But the bill brings up more questions than answers.

An undocumented immigrant's status is fluid depending on individual circumstances, and whether there are immediate family members who are American citizens either by birth or naturalization.

There are no laws prohibiting secondary schools from admitting undocumented students, and every school has its own admission policies. Metro State College of Denver was the first higher education institution in Colorado to adopt the new rate for undocumented students. Section 505 of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (Title 8, Chapter 14, Sec. 1623(a)) is clear that if this benefit is offered to undocumented students, out-of-state students are eligible for the same benefit.

A large majority of undocumented students are from Mexico and receive funds from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF). Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio's proposals for an overhaul in national immigration policy promise to make sweeping changes in the way America handles immigration, including giving an estimated 12,000,000 undocumented immigrants in the United States a pass for getting a work permit and eventually citizenship.

ASSET asserts that it no extraneous and undue burdens will be placed on colleges and universities.

I don't see the proposed legislation to give undocumented immigrants a break in tuition will provide any incentive to become a U.S. citizen or being fair to U.S. citizens who reside outside our state. The idea that this bill will never affect legal residents who pay taxes is shortsighted at best.

Colorado legislators owe students who are here legally a better deal.

Blogging: Another GOP House Member Switches Course on Immigration by Greg Siskind

Bloggings on Immigration Law and Policy

by Greg Siskind

Another GOP House Member Switches Course on Immigration

This time it's Colorado Tea Party Congressman Mike Coffman. From the Denver Post:

At a church in Aurora on Sunday afternoon, U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman told a standing-room-only crowd of roughly 800 that he was in favor of legal status for illegal immigrants and a path to citizenship for their children.

Coffman, a Republican who has proposed anti-immigration legislation in the past, said his change in stance was personal because of interaction with various families. Coffman previously has proposed legislation that would force Colorado's ballots to be English-only and supported a bill to strip natural-born citizenship from children of illegal immigrants.

Tea Party SOTU Response Surprisingly Pro-Immigration

Rand Paul actually had a more pro-immigration tone than Marco Rubio's official GOP speech. Here's what Senator Paul had to say on immigration:

For those who are struggling we want to you to have something infinitely more valuable than a free phone, we want you to have a job and pathway to success. We are the party that embraces hard work and ingenuity, therefore we must be the party that embraces the immigrant who wants to come to America for a better future.

We must be the party who sees immigrants as assets, not liabilities. We must be the party that says, ?If you want to work, if you want to become an American, we welcome you.?

Now this doesn't tell us how they'll vote on comprehensive reform. But Paul has been reported to be meeting with Congressman Gutierrez along with Tea Party darling Paul Ryan. So assuming the Tea Party is not going to support immigration reform may be an overreach.

Rubio Endorses Triggers in SOTU Response

Surprisingly, Senator Marco Rubio devoted just three sentences to immigration reform in his Republican response to the State of the Union Address. Here's the text:

We can also help our economy grow if we have a legal immigration system that allows us to attract and assimilate the world?s best and brightest. We need a responsible, permanent solution to the problem of those who are here illegally. But first, we must follow through on the broken promises of the past to secure our borders and enforce our laws.

How to interpret these words? First, he endorses skilled worker immigration improvements. No surprise there as he's made this a major issue for advocacy. He next calls for a "responsible, permanent solution" regarding illegally present immigrants. Pretty wishy-washy. Could be a path to citizenship. Could be permanent second class status. And he indicates that certifyng border security must happen before people can proceed to that permanent solution.

I guess he's speaking for the GOP and can't commit in this particular speech to too much, but still. He's hardly helping his party improve his image with Latino voters here.

Church Kidnapping Hoax: Man Admits He Lied About Abduction

Posted: February 12, 2013

A North Carolina man who said he was abducted by church members and abused for being gay has admitted the kidnapping story was a hoax.

In addition fabricating the abduction, 22-year-old Michael Lowry also said he lied about being gay. According to The Associated Press, he has since apologized to the Word of Faith Fellowship Church for making up the story.

Rutherfordton County Sheriff?s Detective Sergeant Jamie Keever said Lowry could face several charges for filing a false report. Authorities are still investigating the church kidnapping hoax.

The Huffington Post explains that Lowry?s tale included kidnapping, abuse, and torture at the hands of church members. He said he was knocked unconscious during the first day of confinment. Lowry explained that his captors believed demons were the cause of his homosexuality.

He said of his experience:

?The pastor said to find out what my darkest secret was, and I was like, ?I?m never telling.? They hit my head with fists and I was on the floor, they held my hands and feet down and were pushing on my chest, and I could barely breathe.?

Founder Jane Whaley had maintained the church did not abduct Lowry or subject him to any form of abuse or torture. She added that church members discovered he was gay after watching a local news report about Lowry?s accusations.

The Inquisitr previously reported that the World of Faith Fellowship Church has been the center of controversy in the past. Whaley was convicted of abuse after allegations were made against the church. However, the ruling was later overturned.

Rutherfordton County Sheriff?s office is still looking into why Michael Lowry accused the church of kidnapping and why he lied about being gay. The district attorney has submitted the case to the grand jury to see if charges should be filed against Lowry.

PST: Stories are tumbling out of Red Bull Arena

At some point last year a few soccer journos were sitting around, talking over a soda pop or two. It?s what we do best; you gotta play to your strengths.

The subject wheel finally landed on the New York Red Bulls and someone (sorry I can?t remember who ? proper credit and all) said, ?Oh, the stories are there, and they?ll all start coming out soon enough.?

That day has apparently arrived.

During Red Bulls media day Monday in Harrison, former manager Hans Backe and (more than likely) Rafa Marquez became the favorite punching bags as guys like Thierry Henry, Tim Cahill (pictured) and Heath Pearce began pulling back the curtain on why such a fabulously talented team never found its potential, hovering habitually between ?average? and ?just above average.?

Backe was, let?s say, a ?less respected? figure inside the locker room. (In fairness, it is impossible to know who was making some of the high-profile decisions, Backe or someone above him.)

Said defender Heath Pearce, who was advocating new manager Mike Petke, but saying a lot in his comparison:

If guys can jog around training and get away with it, then what?s going to happen in the games where you need guys in the 90th minute to make plays? From the ground level up, accountability is going to be a major factor for us. Them enabling us to hold each other to that level, with (the coaching staff?s) support, is going to be a big thing for us.?

Advocacy for Petke was a big theme. The players love his dedication the job and the organization. Again, you wonder is that?s more about Petke or more about the previous regime?

And then this: Credit to Cahill, who hasn?t been in the United States for a full year, for already figuring out what inexplicably escapes so very many men in MLS corner offices: that American coaches have a better opportunity to grasp the peculiarities and vagaries unique to MLS. I?ve been banging that drum for years.

It doesn?t take a rocket scientist to see what happened last season. It seemed very open and messy. There was no stability, whereas now there?s stability. There?s Petke.?

Said Cahill of the search that wandered first in Europe ? and where serendipity may have ultimately intervened, saving the Red Bulls from themselves when the chosen coaching accent couldn?t come to terms or couldn?t get a visa or whatever:

I just kept hearing names about European coaches. It?s hard to bring in European coaches that understand the league and the structure ? what?s going to be best to build a team.?

There?s even more in the piece from Brian Straus linked above, including some shots at Dwayne De Rosario, who was even more to the point in assessing his brief run at Red Bull Arena.

I have always enjoyed finding new cards from the 1992 Score baseball card set.

And while I guess that these cards are not exactly ?new?, I guess that I mean that I like re-discovering cards that I have forgotten about?

This card of Eric Davis from the 1992 Score set is great.

Have a look:

DAVIS 5

With the backdrop of Wrigley Field behind him, Davis appears to have connected sharply as his eye is following the ball after it has left his bat.

I like the 3-D element that the card has with Davis? image being imposed on top of the Green bar that runs down the right-side of the card.

Pope says retirement is for 'good of the church'

Filippo Monteforte / AFP - Getty Images

Pope Benedict XVI waves as he takes place for his weekly general audience at the Vatican on Wednesday.

By John Newland, Staff Writer, NBC News

Pope Benedict XVI said Wednesday that he had reached his decision to resign after prayer led him to conclude that it would be for the "good of the church."

His words came in his first public appearance since he announced Monday that he planned to step aside at the end of the month because of his advanced age and declining health.

Benedict, 85, said in a Monday statement that the papacy required ?strength of mind and body,? and that both had deteriorated. He said that he had made the decision ?after having repeatedly examined my conscience before God.?

Although the Pope's announcement that he would abdicate his position seemed sudden, Benedict reportedly made his decision in 2012 after a trip to Cuba and Mexico. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

The pope's brother, Georg Ratzinger, said Tuesday that Benedict, the former Joseph Ratzinger, had also been troubled by problems such as the "Vatileaks" scandal in which a butler leaked secret documents.

"You notice that the aging process impacts body and soul, and especially on his strength," Ratzinger said. "And he thinks that with a reduced workload he couldn't carry on this great responsibility, that a younger person is needed to capture the problems of today's time and who has the power to do what has to be done.??

Benedict on Wednesday thanked the public for their "love and prayers," and asked for continued prayers for him and the Catholic Church, Reuters reported, adding that he said he was certain that the church would sustain him with prayer.

Statement on Virginia Committee Vote on Fox Penning : The ...

February?12,?2013

The Humane Society of the United States issued the following statements on Virginia House of Delegates committee vote on Senate Bill 1280, authored by Sen. David Marsden, D-Burke, to crack down on inhumane fox pens. The measure, which did not pass the committee, would have stopped this egregious form of wildlife abuse.

?We made significant progress this session in ridding the Commonwealth of its last legal bloodsport,? said Sen. Marsden, ?The?pressure?from the?overwhelming majority of Virginians opposed to this practice?requires the General Assembly to take action, and while today?s House Committee decision is disappointing, it?s only a matter of time before we end these cruel staged competitions in?our state.?

Fox pens are fenced enclosures where dogs are released to chase wild-caught, stocked foxes, often killing them. More than 6,000 foxes were subjected to these unethical and inhumane events in Virginia in just the last five years.?The bill originally included a moratorium on new facilities, but did not limit the number of dogs released into existing facilities.

?The Humane Society of the United States and its supporters are disappointed Senate Bill 1280 did not move forward today,? said Laura Donahue, Virginia state director for The HSUS. ?We urge the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to take into consideration concerns raised during the recent hearings, quickly implement regulations to crack down on this cruel practice and help put an end to Virginia?s last blood sport.?

The bill passed the Senate with a bipartisan vote of 24 to 16. A broad coalition of Virginians testified in support of SB 1280, including a Virginia hunter, a resident living next door to a fox pen, a former trapper, a religious leader, wildlife care experts and animal welfare leaders who all testified in support of this legislation.

Thanks to Sen. Marsden?s leadership, this issue has gained momentum over the last year, making Virginians very aware of the cruelties associated with fox penning. Last year, senators voted for the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to study fox penning. As a result, this spring the board over the DGIF will now consider additional fox pen regulations.

More information is available at humanesociety.org/Virginia.

Facts:

  • Dogs often harm and kill the fenced wildlife, fueling a constant ? and often illegal interstate ? demand to stock enclosures with more foxes.
  • In the fall of 2007, a multi-state sting of fox and coyote pens uncovered the interstate smuggling of wildlife for sale to these pens. Virginia officials temporarily shut down 31 of the Commonwealth?s 41 pens operating at the time for violating permit requirements.?
  • Captive fenced wildlife facilities are historically responsible for the spread of some strains of rabies and other deadly wildlife diseases.??

Gene today, gone tomorrow: Genes for autism and schizophrenia only active in developing brains

Feb. 11, 2013 ? Genes linked to autism and schizophrenia are only switched on during the early stages of brain development, according to a study in mice led by researchers at the University of Oxford.

This new study adds to the evidence that autism and schizophrenia are neurodevelopmental disorders, a term describing conditions that originate during early brain development.

The researchers studied gene expression in the brains of mice throughout their development, from 15-day old embryos to adults, and their results are published recently in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The study is a collaboration between researchers from the University of Oxford, King's College London and Imperial College London, and was funded by the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust.

The research focused on cells in the 'subplate', a region of the brain where the first neurons (nerve cells) develop. Subplate neurons are essential to brain development, and provide the earliest connections within the brain.

'The subplate provides the scaffolding required for a brain to grow, so is important to consider when studying brain development,' says Professor Zolt?n Moln?r, senior author of the paper from the University of Oxford, 'Looking at the pyramids in Egypt today doesn't tell us how they were actually built. Studying adult brains is like looking at the pyramids today, but by studying the developing brains we are able to see the transient scaffolding that has been used to construct it.'

The study shows that certain genes linked to autism and schizophrenia are only active in the subplate during specific stages of development. 'The majority of the autism susceptibility genes are only expressed in the subplate of the developing mouse brain,' explains Dr Anna Hoerder-Suabedissen, who led the study at the University of Oxford, 'Many can only be found at certain stages of development, making them difficult to identify at later stages using previous techniques.'

The group were able to map gene activity in full detail thanks to powerful new methods which allowed them to dissect and profile gene expression from small numbers of cells. This also enabled them to identify the different populations of subplate neurons more accurately.

Subplate neurons were first discovered in the 1970s by Professors Ivica Kostovi? and Pasko Rakic of Yale University.

'I am excited to see tangible genetic links supporting, even indirectly, the idea of a possible role of the transient embryonic subplate zone in the origin of disorders such as autism and schizophrenia,' says Professor Rakic, 'If this is possible to show in mice, where the subplate is relatively small, it is likely to be even more pronounced in humans, where it is much more evolved.

'The study from Professor Moln?r's group at Oxford may be the first step toward finding more such links in the future and opens the possibility of directly examining the roles of genetic variation and exposure to various environmental factors in animal models.'

Professor David Edwards, Director of the Centre for the Developing Brain at King's College London, and co-author of the paper, said: 'Using advanced techniques we have been able to define the biochemical pathways that are important during a particular phase of brain development. It has been suspected for a long time that if the development of the cortex is disrupted by genetic abnormalities or environmental stress (such as prematurity) this would have long-lasting adverse effects on brain development and could lead to problems like ADHD or autism. This study defines genes that are important in mice at this critical period and this does indeed seem to include genes known to predispose to autism and schizophrenia. It focuses attention even more firmly on early brain development as a cause of these distressing neuropsychological problems.'

Professor Hugh Perry, chair of the Medical Research Council's Neuroscience and Mental Health Board, said: 'By being able to pinpoint common genetic factors for neurological conditions such as autism and schizophrenia, scientists are able to understand an important part of the story as to why things go awry as our brains develop. The Medical Research Council's commitment to a broad portfolio of neuroscience and mental health research places us in a unique position to respond to the challenge of mental ill health and its relationship with physical health and wellbeing.'

'The State of the Union is?' According to Rep. Ellison, George Saunders, David Walker

Each day leading up to President Obama's State of the Union address, ABCNews.com will bring you newsmakers thoughts on what "The State of the Union is ?"

With one day left before President Obama's State of the Union address, three newsmakers weighed in on the current state of the union. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., said the state of the union "needs a real jolt" to ensure working class Americans experience success in our economy.

"The state of the union is a snapshot of where the country is at a particular moment, and right now where our country is is in a difficult state for working class families. Income inequality is growing, and it's a serious problem and it's actually undermining economic growth. We need more working and middle class people with more money to spend so that when they spend that money at the stores and the shops, that the stores and shops can hire more people and we can really boost up the economy, pay down the deficit and really help people achieve their dreams and hopes and aspirations for their family in terms of education, retirement and so many other things," Ellison said.

"The state of the union, I think, needs a real jolt when it comes to making sure that working folks have a real shot in a fair economy, and we're not there yet," Ellison added. "I'm looking forward to the president to speak directly to that issue and directly to how the sequester represents a threat to that as we dismantle the ladder of opportunity for so many people across this country. Right now we've got a big storm in the northeast, are we going to have enough FEMA help? Are we going to have enough home and heating oil for people. All critical questions for the state of the union."

George Saunders, author of "Tenth of December," characterized the current state of the union as "mixed."

"The state of the union is in my view divided and divided along of kind of media constructed lines - left, right that don't really reflect the reality of most Americans hearts and characters," Saunders said. "I think one of the challenges we face is to try to go back to a set of essential American virtues that we all share and kind of resist the tendency of the left and the right to reinforce this divide which is largely fictive."

David Walker, former U.S. comptroller general and founder and CEO of the Comeback America Initiative, categorized the state of the union as "mixed."

"The state of the union is mixed. The United States is the world's largest economy, the temporary sole super power, the leading democracy on earth, but we face a number of serious sustainability challenges that threaten our future position in the world, our future standard of living at home, our future national security and our future domestic tranquility," Walker told ABC News. "Our political system is broken. We face a number of known and growing problems and yet the political system has not been able to effectively address them until they reach crisis proportions. We've got to put our finances in order. We need to deal with our critical infrastructure. We need to generate more opportunity. We need to modify our immigration laws, our energy and environmental policies, we have to control healthcare costs. We have to deal with all of these issues if we want our future to be better than our past."

"The truth is our financial condition as a country is poor and deteriorating. There's only one country in Europe that has a total higher government debt to GDP than us and that's Greece and we don't want to follow their example. The president is the commander in chief, the chief executive officer, he is the only person elected by all the people. He needs to lead the country to help create a better future," Walker said. "We need to focus on pro growth and opportunity. We need to focus on individual equity. We need to focus on fiscal responsibility and these are key pillars to help create a better future. More growth and opportunity today, more fiscal responsibility for tomorrow. Do them both at the same time and do them in 2013."

NAACP President James Bible pays a visit to Ballard

James Bible was not afraid to speak to a crowd dressed merely in sweatpants and a sweatshirt.

At a meeting about homelessness on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Ballard Odd Fellows Hall, King County National Association for Advancement of Colored People President James Bible paid a visit to talk about poverty and the law.

He was late and he showed up dressed in a sweatshirt and sweat pants -- hardly the formally dressed lawyer that he presents himself to be in the courtroom -- but he made up to a small, pro-social services crowd with eloquence and an explanation.

?I?m thankful to be in front of a group that does not judge me for not wearing a suit and tie and wearing a sweatshirt and sweatpants,? he said. ?What ultimately I think we have to talk about ? is make it critical that we put the human condition first.?

Bible, referring to people of low-income and/or in a state of homelessness, explained that people need to have the same rights, no matter who they were or what their appearance was. He was critical of comments on local Ballard news sources -- he didn't name them -- that expressed negativity toward social services in the neighborhood. (No one in the crowd had a negative opinion on the issues.)

?We all deserve shelter, we all deserve clothing, we all deserve to be here,? Bible said. ?It?s going to be up to us to standup and say that people deserve to live in Ballard, in Seattle in general and everywhere.?

Bible said poor people were at a clear disadvantage when it came to the law.

?The law is not at this stage designed to protect people in poverty,? he said.

Specifically, he pressed the point that poor people need proper, professional representation in the court.

?We need civil public defenders. Until you have that, you won?t have equality under the law,? he said. ?When you see an attorney who looks across the aisle and sees someone who is not an attorney, maybe they will do something they wouldn?t do if an attorney was there. It?s amazing.?

Bible explained that when he would represent a client who was from a low income background, that the opposing lawyer wouldn't know what to do. He said they have gotten so used to taking advantage of poor people.

Regarding how much poor people are helped these days, Bible said: ?We claimed at one point that there is a war on poverty. What we have is an absolutely unadulterated war on poor people.?

Drinking may improve ability to detect changes

Feb. 11, 2013 ? Moderate intoxication may help a person notice minor changes in a visual scene, researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have found. During tests of "change blindness," the inability to notice minor changes, intoxicated participants detected as many changes as sober subjects and with shorter response times.

"Both the sober and drunk people find the same number of changes, but drunk people find them faster," says Jennifer Wiley, professor of psychology at UIC and senior author on the study.

Two experiments comprised the new study, which was published online in the journal Consciousness and Cognition.

First, 48 males were given a baseline task-set to make sure the drinking and non-drinking groups were equal at the outset.

The drinking group then watched an animated movie while consuming vodka and cranberry juice until they reached approximately .08 percent blood alcohol content -- legal intoxication. The nondrinking group watched the same movie.

Researchers then challenged each group using a flicker paradigm (going back and forth between two versions of the same image with one small change) in eight rounds of the test. Each round featured an everyday setting, such as a farmers market or an office. Participants had to indicate when they noticed an item change, and identify it.

People typically used one of two strategies, Wiley said.

"As western readers in the U.S., we usually start at the top-left corner and scan back and forth looking for anything that might be changing," said Wiley, in describing a systematic approach.

An alternative method is not to scan. Rather than focusing attention, the subject waits for the change to "pop out."

"Our suspicion is that the sober people are using a more systematic, methodical strategy, and the drunk people are waiting for the 'pop out,'" Wiley said.

A second experiment, using working memory tasks -- which require focused attention -- proved more difficult for the intoxicated group. These tests require remembering sequences of letters or shapes while performing another task, such as solving a math problem, at the same time.

"These tests require you to go back and forth between two tasks, which means you need to be directing your attention," Wiley said. "So there is a lot of updating, and a lot of back and forth. Drunk people are less able to do this, and they did 15 to 30 percent worse on these tasks."

Co-author Gregory Colflesh, now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Maryland, says the findings "nicely supplement our previous research illustrating that moderate intoxication improved creativity."

In that study, Wiley, Colflesh, and UIC graduate student Andrew Jarosz found that participants who were slightly under the .08 percent legal limit for blood alcohol outperformed sober subjects in solving word association problems.

Wiley says for some tasks, like change detection and creative problem-solving, "you are sometimes better off not trying to direct yourself to find an answer."
