Dolby Labs and Philips unveil Dolby 3D tech, want to deliver glasses-free 3D in HD

Dolby Labs and Philips debut Dolby 3D tech, want to deliver glasses-free 3D in HD
Dolby helped the 3D revolution happen in movie theaters years ago, and now it's teamed up with Philips to do the same for TVs, tablets, laptops and phones. The two companies have created a format and content delivery technology, dubbed Dolby 3D, to bring high definition 3D content to any and all devices with 3D displays, including those that don't require glasses. Its secret sauce automatically optimizes video for different screen sizes and also upgrades half-resolution 3D to full-res. The idea is to provide both broadcasters and OEMs with a way to deliver 3D HD content to customers buying Dolby 3D devices, while remaining compatible with existing 3D gadgets. All that's left is to actually build some hardware that'll let us see all those snazzy suits from Mad Men in high-def and the third dimension.

Galaxy Tab 2 release dates and pricing emerges

7-inch for $250 on April 22, 10.1-inch for $450 on May 13

Galaxy Tab 2

As you may remember, we got our first look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 at MWC in late February. The slightly awkwardly-named tablets build on last year's Galaxy Tab designs with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a fresh design, in an attempt to steer clear of any legal shenanigans.

Today the first information on U.S. pricing and availability for both devices has become available. Pre-orders for the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2 are due to begin later today, with the device itself going on sale next Sunday, April 22. At $250, the 7-incher's price is competitive, and for your money you'll get Android 4.0 with TouchWiz on a 1024x600 PLS TFT display (that's Samsung's version of IPS). Internally it's powered by a solid but unremarkable 1GHz dual-core CPU, with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage.

The 10.1-inch Tab 2 will appear three weeks later on May 13, with pre-orders starting May 4. Prices start at $450 for the 16GB version, and internals are the similar to the 7-inch variant, with the only differences being the aforementioned 16GB of storage and a bump in screen resolution, up to 1280x800.

While the Tab 2 10.1 is a relatively run-of-the-mill Android slate, the 7.0 version's low price point marks it as a potential competitor for the rumored Google-branded, ASUS-made tablet. This is said to be on track for a July release, but has yet to be officially confirmed by either company.

Sony's SmartWatch now available in the US for $150

Sony SmartWatch

Sony announced today that its SmartWatch, the first accessory in its line of "Smart Extras", is now available through its online store. SmartWatch connects to your Android-powered smartphone via Bluetooth and pushed incoming texts, emails, and call notifications to your wrist for fast and easy access. The SmartWatch will ship with Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, a weather widget, and a music player,  though it is compatible with a number of current Android apps. Sony says that developers will be able to create SmartWatch-specific apps designed for the device's 1.3-inch OLED display.

The dust and splash-proof SmartWatch will set you back $149.99, and it's available with your choice of pink, white, mint, grey, and blue wristbands. Right now the device's functionality might not justify its pricetag, but we're certainly excited to see what Sony and developers will do to make the SmartWatch a more essential accessory. Hit the source link to grab yours today directly from Sony.

George Zimmerman charged in Trayvon Martin case: Why now, and what next?

George Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Trayvon Martin. Florida?s Stand Your Ground law could loom large moving forward.?

Forty-five days after police in Sanford, Fla., released neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman without charges after he shot an unarmed black teenager, a special Florida prosecutor has charged him with second-degree murder.

News that Mr. Zimmerman was in custody in Florida capped an emotional and tense three weeks that raised questions about racial injustice and sparked a fiery national debate about Florida's landmark Stand Your Ground self-defense law, which prosecutors acknowledge they may still have to contend with in the case.

Amid massive public pressure and attention from the White House and the Justice Department, special state prosecutor Angela Corey announced Wednesday that the state was charging Zimmerman, a 28-year-old former altar boy going to school to become a police officer, for his role in Trayvon Martin's death.

Saying her decision had nothing to do with public pressure, Ms. Corey said she believes prosecutors have evidence to prove that Zimmerman did not act in self-defense under the state's Stand Your Ground law. A charge of second-degree murder involves the claim that death was caused by dangerous conduct and an obvious lack of concern for human life. Florida law requires a minimum punishment of 25 years and a maximum of life in prison without parole if convicted.

?We have to have reasonable certainty of conviction any time we file charges,? said Corey. ?If Stand Your Ground is an issue, we'll fight it.?

Sanford police released Zimmerman on the night of the shooting, believing they didn't have probable cause given his self-defense claim and physical evidence ? including blood on nose and back of his head ? that he had defended himself.?

But Corey said the case ?changed course? amid a public outcry over the Sanford Police Department's assertion that there would be no arrest, and as Gov. Rick Scott appointed her three weeks ago to lead the investigation.

?The Supreme Court has defined our role as not only ministers of justice, but seekers of truth, and we stay true to that mission,? said Corey, who said she had prayed with the Martin family at their first meeting three weeks ago, though she had not promised them that any charges would be filed.

Given the tension over the case in Sanford, officials in Seminole County ? where the special prosecutor is based ?remained on high alert ahead of Wednesday's announcement. On Monday, an empty police cruiser was riddled with bullets near where Trayvon was shot. Corey said Zimmerman was being held in an undisclosed location for his safety and the safety of others.

?I trust in the goodness of all Florida citizens to allow justice system to reach appropriately conclusion in this case,? Governor Scott said.

According to Martin's family, the arrest is the first step toward closure. They have urged police to arrest Zimmerman, alleging that the outcome would have been different had a black man shot a white man. Thousands of people have marched, many of them wearing a similar hoodie to what Trayvon was wearing the night he died. More than a million people signed a petition for police to arrest Zimmerman on the Change.org website.

?We simply wanted arrest, nothing more, nothing less, and we got it, and I say thank you, thank you Lord, thank you, Jesus,? Trayvon's mother, Sybrina Fulton, said. ?Secondly, I just want to speak from my heart to your heart, because a heart has no color. It's not black, it's not white, it's red. Thank you from my heart to your heart. ?

Homeowners' emphasis on energy efficiency grows | Pro Hands at ...

(ARA) ? Even in a volatile economy, homeowners are making home upkeep a priority. While the number of projects annually had been on the decline in recent years, a study from BuildFax, a resource for building, remodeling and repair information, found remodeling activity was up in 2011 over 2010. Additional data shows homeowners are opting to invest in what matters most with projects that benefit their wallets, personal comfort and the environment.

Know the facts

Before buying anything, shoppers are taking time to learn more about the products they put in their homes. For one in four consumers, knowing and understanding what makes up general household products is important. As options continue to increase, this attention to research is key to finding efficient products that offer maximum value. For instance, homeowners will find that a few newer home insulation products that help provide greater energy efficiency also boast new sustainable formulations. Owens Corning EcoTouch insulation is made from 99 percent natural materials, contains a minimum of 58 percent recycled content and is verified formaldehyde free.

Energy-efficient essentials

According to the 2010 Home Improvement Research Institute Trends Program Report, reducing household energy usage and bills through energy-efficient improvements continues to be the No. 1 reason homeowners make home improvements. That same report also indicated six out of 10 consumers need help identifying what they can do to be more environmentally conscious.

?Now is the right time to make efficiency improvements around the home because homeowners will see an immediate impact on their monthly utility bills, and will reap even greater benefits in the long term,? says Frank O?Brien-Bernini, chief sustainability officer at Owens Corning. ?According to the U.S. Department of Energy, buildings use more energy in the United States than either transportation or industry, accounting for the consumption of 40 percent of our nation?s energy resources. On a more granular level, the primary use of energy in a home is for heating and cooling. In many homes, excessive energy is wasted through poorly sealed and insulated attics, walls and ductwork ? all problems that can be solved by handy do-it-yourselfers or through experienced contractors.?

The Home Improvement Research Institute reports roughly one in three homeowners plans to purchase more energy-efficient doors, windows or HVAC systems in the coming year. Sealing all openings around doors and windows can help homeowners make the most of their investment. Air ducts should also be inspected to ensure they are clean, are free of leaks and holes and direct air to the right spaces.

Recycling 101

While recycled content is commonly focused on, recyclable materials are also important. Often with home improvement projects, old materials are thrown out and replaced with the new. What many homeowners may not know is that many building materials and appliances are recyclable. Recycling is a better solution for the environment, and may be less costly than taking material to a landfill.

?There are more recyclable materials on and in a home than you might first assume. Millions of tons of shingles torn off from roofs end up in our country?s landfills each year. Fortunately, the technology now exists for all those shingles to be recycled instead,? says O?Brien-Bernini. ?In 2009, Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt, LLC formed an alliance with Heritage Environmental Services to create a Shingle Recycling Program with roofing contractors to make recycling convenient, cost-competitive and differentiating and have since recycled more than 90,000 tons of asphalt shingles.?

Homeowners looking for more information about shingle recycling and other types of recycling can turn to Earth911.com, with whom Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt, LLC recently also formed an alliance. The site hosts the largest and most accurate recycling directory in North America and provides information about what materials can be recycled as well as lists of recyclers in local markets.

Purebred Pets - Cat Breeds

Limited Time Only! Save up to 40% on Hundreds of Items at the PetSmart Basket of Savings Event

Cat breeds vary from registry to registry, and from country to country. Sometimes the same cat will be considered a different breed in different places. Some cat breeds are well established, while others are experimental and new, or have nearly disappeared from lack of breeders. Most cats are what are called domestic longhairs, domestic shorthairs, or moggies ? all terms that simply describe a cat that is of no distinct breed or pure bloodline.

Cat breeds vary from the petite Munchkin to the big Norweigan Forest Cat, from the hairless Sphynx to the long, thick coat of a Persian. Perhaps because cats are so independent, and tend to choose their own people and places to stay and are quite ready to simply take themselves elsewhere they are one of the few domesticated animals that we have not tinkered with to extremes. Unlike dogs, which we have bred down to the diminutive chihuahua, and up to the massive Great Dane or horses that vary from draft horses like the Clydesdale to the dainty Miniature Horses, cats have proven quite resistant to selective breeding.

I?ve also heard it said that every trace of a pure cat breed will disappear in only three generations of breeding with non-purebred cats. However, I have seen distinctly Siamese colored and type kittens show up in a litter that did not have a Siamese parent. Manx cats are purposely bred to cats who have normal tails in order to avoid physical problems created by breeding a tailess cat to another tailess cat. And did you know that litters of kittens can have more than one father?

Here is a list of cat breeds that I will be using to write articles about purebred cats for this blog. If you have a favorite breed that you don?t see here, feel free to contact me and tell me about them! You can always email me at sffoovayATgmail.com.
