"This is an important finding because most research on attention problems has focused on biological and genetic factors rather than on environmental factors," said Douglas A. Gentile, PhD, of Iowa State University and lead author of the study published this week in the debut issue of APA's journal Psychology and Popular Media Culture.

Although the findings indicated that playing violent video games also can be linked to impulsivity and attention problems, the overall amount of time spent playing any type of video game proved to be a greater factor, according to the article. This was the case regardless of a child's gender, race or socioeconomic status.

Researchers collected data from 3,034 children, ages 8 to 17 years old, over three years at 12 schools in Singapore. The children provided information about their video game playing habits by completing questionnaires in their classrooms at three intervals, each a year apart starting in grades three, four, seven and eight. They also completed psychological tests commonly used to measure attention and impulsiveness. Regarding attention, the children answered questions such as how often they "fail to give close attention to details or make careless mistakes" in their work or "blurt out answers before questions have been completed." For the impulsivity test, they selected points they felt described themselves, such as "I often make things worse because I act without thinking" or "I concentrate easily."

The study described attention problems as having a difficult time engaging in or sustaining behavior to reach a goal, particularly when the subject is difficult or boring. Yet previous research has found that playing video games can improve visual attention for rapid and accurate recognition of information from the environment, the authors noted.

"It is possible that electronic media use can impair attention necessary for concentration even as it enhances the ability to notice and process visual information," Gentile said.

Understanding some of the environmental influences that video gaming may have on attention and impulsivity can help develop more effective solutions for children and parents, the authors said.

LOS ANGELES -- It?s called the "rubber room" -- a popular name for a reassignment center many say is emblematic of what is wrong with public education.

The rubber room is where teachers accused of everything from drug abuse to sexual harassment are sent to do nothing, but still collect a salary, benefits and accrue time toward pensions.

"Several of the people I know in rubber rooms have been there two years, some people as long as five years," said Leonard Isenberg, a disciplined Los Angeles Unified School District teacher. "You don?t just sit there. You can?t do anything. Think of Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo, with a paycheck."

The LAUSD has 161 teachers assigned to various offices throughout the district. It?s a policy LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy is trying to change ? as in the case with former Miramonte Elementary School teacher and accused child molester, Mark Berndt.

"Traditionally what the district has done is to say we put you in an office, we pay you, and we wait for all the stuff to happen," Deasy said. "I am not acting that way."

There are plenty of teachers who support efforts to get rid of reassignment centers, but for different reasons.

Leonard Isenberg, who taught in the district for 25 years, said he ended up in one after repeatedly complaining that his school, Central Continuation High School, was graduating students with second-grade reading levels.

He said that angered the principal, and that led to accusations of him yelling at students and watching pornography in class.

Isenberg used his time in the rubber room to create a web site, perdaily.com, which looks critically at the district, reassignment centers and its discipline procedure.

He was ultimately fired by the district, but still has an appeal hearing later this year. Isenberg said the district?s procedures make teachers guilty until proven innocent and fearful of false accusations.

"The students know they can get teachers in trouble by just saying anything," Isenberg said.

Retired teacher and California Teachers Empowerment Network president Larry Sand said rubber rooms are necessary and are not going away anytime soon.

"There?s arbitration and hearings and all sorts of things that have to take place before a teacher would actually lose his job," Sand said. "If he?s not in the classroom, they have to put him somewhere."

So an event is held at STATE Ultra Lounge, apparently one of Providence?s hot spots. ?When Jaime called that morning to confirm, they asked if she would, umm, reschedule her event. After Jaime gently but firmly convincing them to honor their agreement and open for the sake of preregistered guests, STATE ?charged Jaime?s group an outrageous sum of money for less-than-exquisite hors d?oeuvres such as?chicken fingers and pigs in blankets that could have easily been purchased from BJ?s for $20. Jaime told me ?As a business owner and marketing professional, I am bewildered and appalled.?

And here is that three-way intersection of crap service, attitude, and ignorance. STATE was mad that they had to open their doors when they otherwise would not. ?AMASNE had a small but dedicated following who had already registered, but apparently not a big enough group to satisfy STATE so they gouged on the food deal. ?Duh. IPURSE uniquely merges RFID (radio frequency identification) and NFC (near-field communication) technologies together into a single system. Romney's comments come as China's vice president and presumed future leader visits the United States to build ties and urge greater cooperation between the two countries. Obama and other administration officials have pressed Xi to improve China's human rights record and play by the rules of the world economy.

China's leader-in-waiting visited America's grainbelt on Thursday and discussed increased trade in farm goods with U.S. agricultural officials.

China is not beloved by the American electorate. Its trade and currency policies are blamed for job losses in the U.S. manufacturing sector that hit important election battleground states such as Ohio especially hard.

Romney, who is running in large part on his experience as a business executive, has made tough talk on China a centerpiece of his campaign's economic message and last week criticized China's "authoritarianism" during an address to an audience of technology executives.

"Unless China changes its ways, on day one of my presidency I will designate it a currency manipulator and take appropriate counteraction. A trade war with China is the last thing I want, but I cannot tolerate our current trade surrender," he wrote on Thursday.

He also called for reversing defense cuts and maintaining a strong military presence in the Pacific to balance "the long-term challenge posed by China's build-up."

"This is not an invitation to conflict. Instead, this policy is a guarantee that the region remains open for cooperative trade, and that economic opportunity and democratic freedom continue to flourish across East Asia," he wrote.

The Idaho Petroleum Council opposed the ordinance.

?It wasn?t a surprise,? said Jon Foster, a spokesman for the council. ?I think it?s unfortunate because we?ll soon see passage of comprehensive rules and regulations for the entire state that will better achieve the outcome the Washington County commissioners are hoping for.?

The petroleum council also has warned counties that defending ordinances that conflict with state laws could be costly.
