House GOP Looks to Trim Environmental Rules in Budget Bill (The Atlantic Wire)

As the debt ceiling debate looms large, House Republicans have filled an appropriations bill with 39 riders that would curb environmental regulations, such as prohibiting the Bureau of Land Management from preserving new wilderness areas or loosening the enforcement and policing of mountaintop-removal mining and uranium prospecting near the Grand Canyon. There's no way the 39 riders will pass but some Democrats and environmentalists worry that some could make it through as the two parties negotiate, reports The New York Times. ?You have a fatal political momentum,? said David Goldston, director of government affairs for the Natural Resources Defense Council. Idaho Republican Mike Simpson defended the riders: ?Many of us think that the overregulation from E.P.A. is at the heart of our stalled economy.? The bill is currently under "open debate" on the House floor but it's passage isn't imminent, reports The Times, merely posing concern among environmental groups in the "coming months."

Nothing Beats A Camping Trip! - Travel

Are you planning a trip? Why not take a minute and thinks about camping. There are often many camp sites along the route to your destination, so have some fun, get out the map and plan a fun filled camping trip.

You and your family can sit down around the table and map your route. Suppose there is a camp site about half way to your destination? Check it out. Many areas have wooded camp sites as well as many by a lake. You get to choose!

Where would the kids like to stay? How about the site that is wooded? Is it just around the bend from the lake? That would be great! It is the best of both worlds. You can go fishing and swimming. They may have paddle boats and canoes you can rent so you can play out on the lake. Oh my and a zip line? The kids would love that.

They may also have the restrooms and showers which is a must.

And if animals are welcome, that would decide it, we are going camping.

Imagine packing your van with your tent and other gear. You won?t need a stove because you will be roasting hot dogs and making S?mores over an open fire.

But you take a small one anyway so you can make bacon and eggs in the morning. You will have your sleeping bags to stay toasty warm should the air at night cool off. Oh and remember your pillow.

When you arrive at the camp site, it?s better then you could have imagined. Everyone piles out of the van, ready to set up the tent but you decide to check out the lake first. There is beautiful white sand for as far as the eye can see.

The lake is clean and clear. To the far right you see where the boats and canoes are stored. You decide to take a stroll to the end of the dock to see if you can see some fish. The kids are thrilled at the amount of fish they can see swimming under the dock.

Then back up towards your camp site is a little store. You go in to see what they have. They sell things that you may have forgot, soap, toothbrushes and such. You need to get back to your site to set up your tent and gather some fire wood. Your vacation is going to be great!

5 Easy Tips for Making Better Choices at the Grocery Store ...

Eating healthy is important, but making healthy food choices isn?t always easy. Misleading claims on product labels and packaging often make the choices even harder. Below are five simple steps to make shopping healthy a breeze.

Never go to the store hungry

Going to the store with a blood sugar that?s plummeting will most certainly guarantee less than healthful choices as your cravings for the quickly digested energy found in simple sugars peak.? A sensible meal or snack before shopping can be the difference between whether? Tastycakes or tasty strawberries end up in your cart.

Make a list and stick too it

Don?t leave your grocery purchases up to chance. Plan what you are going to buy before ever stepping foot inside the store. Commit to those decisions by making a list and then once in the store make sure you stick to the list.

Shop the stores perimeter

There seems to be a growing consensus among health professionals. The more processing a food undergoes, the less nutrition it provides. Lucky for us most ?fresh? items are conveniently located along the stores outer perimeter. Things like fresh fruits and veggies, meats and seafood, eggs and diary. The bulk of the foods in your cart should come from these sections.

If you can?t pronounce all the ingredients of a food item, you should probably pass

I don?t know about you, but if I can?t read the ingredients, I?m not sure I should be eating it. While many of these additives are supposed to be safe, at the very least they are another sign that a food has undergone mass processing, something we would all do better to avoid.

Pay with cash

Believe it or not, paying with green seems to increase the likelihood of buying more greens. That?s right, new research suggests that the ?pain? of paying with cash often deters impulsive behaviors, and that includes making unhealthy food purchases. But simply using your debit card isn?t sufficient since debit cards also seem to damp down this effect. In order to really feel the pain of payment you need to physically fork over the cash.

And that?s it! Simple.

Good luck and great health,

Detroit goes green? Carmakers must average 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025

Automakers must improve their mileage every year, up to a fleet-wide average of 54.5 mpg in 14 years. Green groups praise the new regulations, while opponents call them job-killers.

The White House and automakers are expected to formally announce Friday a new agreement to raise auto mileage standards annually until they reach 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, according to groups briefed on details of the changes.

In April, automakers and the Obama administration finalized the first increases in vehicle fuel economy standards in two decades ? a rule that hiked fleet mileage to 35.5 miles per gallon by 2015. The next month, they agreed, in principle, to take the next step. That rule ? expected to be finalized a year from now ? would set standards to apply to vehicles built between 2016 and 2025.

Officials at the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers were not commenting on the deal. Environmentalists briefed today on the deal outlines were cautiously optimistic.

"What we're hearing today sounds like a very positive development," says Michelle Robinson, clean vehicles program director for the Union of Concerned Scientists in Washington. "We think the technology exists to save even more fuel and reduce pollution. But overall, we're pleased at the direction this is taking."

The new standards represent a compromise for environmentalists, who had pushed for standards to be raised to 62 mpg by 2025. Automakers initially responded that 45 mpg was the highest they could go, saying the tougher standards would hammer profits and require building mainly electric and hybrid vehicles.

The administration and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) are required under the 2007 energy act to develop standards for 2025. The auto industry joined the discussions, eager to attain a single national standard agreed to by California ? thereby eliminating the possibility of state-by-state standards ? and to better coordinate drive-train development.

The new standards, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council, include:

  • An overall standard of 54.5 miles per gallon (mpg) ? representing about a 40 percent reduction in fuel consumption and a 50 percent cut in carbon pollution from today?s vehicles.
  • A 5 percent annual mileage improvement for cars from 2017 to 2025. Light trucks, including SUVs, would be allowed a slower rate of improvement ? 3.5 percent annually from 2017 to 2021, and 5 percent annually for 2022 to 2025. The exception for light trucks over that five-year period is the reason why the originally-proposed 56.2 mpg is now 54.5 mpg.
  • A midterm review, by spring 2018, to assess whether the standards are on track. That joint assessment ? by EPA, NHSTA, and the California Air Resources Board ? will be used by EPA to determine if any changes are needed.
  • Extra mileage credits for mild-hybrid and strong-hybrid pickups.
  • Special credits for technologies such as louvered grills, solar roof cells, and capturing thermoelectric waste from exhaust.
  • A cap on the number of electric vehicles considered zero-emissions.

The agreement comes on the heels of intense media battles between green groups and automakers, who aired advertisements in 14 states that claimed the new standards would hurt job creation. Meanwhile, legislators sent letters of their own to the administration.

Some in Congress were quick to praise the new deal.

?These new fuel efficiency standards represent the single greatest step our country has taken to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and to encourage a new generation of advanced vehicle technology entrepreneurs," said Rep. Ed Markey (D) of Massachusetts in a statement. "For the next decade and a half consumers will pay less to go farther on every tank of gas ... cutting oil imports and pollution."

But environmentalists remain cautious, waiting to see "the loopholes" ? and if the industry will drive a truck through them ? during the rule-writing process of the next year.

?We have not seen a final document yet, but based on what we have heard so far, the White House is taking a strong step toward lowering drivers' gas bills and cutting dangerous pollution," says Roland Hwang, transportation program director for the Natural Resources Defense Council. "But we need to run the numbers before we give our seal of approval."

The Right Owner Builder Home Building | HOME Furniture Gardening ...

Owner Builder Home Building Services to provide specific services to help you build your own home. In this article I want to focus on select Service Owner Builder RIGHT. For more information about what most of these services provides a look at my article Owner Builder Home Building Service.

How many of you already know that I am an advocate of building your own home. I built mine using a contractor and do some work yourself. It is my opinion is the best way to save money up. However, many of you may not have the time or simply prefer to have services to help you in building your home. This approach is probably the best of both worlds for you to save money and have a professional service to help you. Yes, you will not save much money, but probably the best way for you.
Builder Services owner choose the right person is crucial to the success of the project of building your new home. I would suggest doing the following:

Find at least three construction services that you feel suits your needs and your budget. Ask in advance to schedule.

Gather all the information about each of them before any meeting. Do a search on Google, MSN and Yahoo search engine in each service. You?d be surprised what appears today in the business of rating services on the network.

Call the BBB, Chamber of Commerce and local city, county and state government and inquire about pending and resolved complaints. Also find out if they are in good standing with these organizations.

Once you have found the 3 that passed the original question and you are satisfied that they are a good deal, then go see them. Do not do this before doing research. Do not let the fancy website, brochures and influence subtle art of selling before you have some cold hard facts. Remember past performance with future behavior. If they have a serious problem in the past you may not want to deal with.

Do not make decisions in the first session in a meeting with your choices. Make sure not to sign anything and keep your options open until you have followed through each one and do more research.

Here are some ideas for questions you should ask in your meeting with the prospective Owner Builder Services:

-? What do you charge for your services? Is the cost per square foot when the suspect based on my home? They find that the total square footage (under roof) or the living room? Or, is it fixed? You provide me with a written list of the total cost?
- Do you provide a house plan? Does the home plan custom plans drawn up for you? What is the cost for this plan? How many revisions do you get? What is the fee for each revision (if any)? How long does it take to pull the plan (in writing)? How many copies of the plan of my house get? They are a complete set of plans that cover all business? And if my way is the wrong plan?
-? What kind of financing do you offer? Do you offer a choice of a closing time? Did you run all your financing through a bank? Who is the bank? What interest rates etc ? and what your commission to act as my mortgage broker?
-? You provide a list of approved contractors home? If so, whether they work exclusively for you? They are all bonded and insured? How big is the list, if you have multiple contractors on your list in all the commercials? Can I view a list in his office to check the size before I sign up with you? What if I have problems with the contractor? You talked to contractors and help me solve my problem with them?
-? You come to my local building advice and guidance? How many times have you been? You will find me there so I can learn from your expertise? What exactly will you personally do to help me build my house, which helped me get my foundation plan, discuss the problem of framing, etc.
-? Do you provide support and assistance by telephone, via e-mail or fax? How exactly will you respond to me when I needed you? Can I ask questions when I need to get a response? There will be a qualified construction professionals available to me to be able to speak? What is the average response time?
You, or anyone associated with you, once processed, personal or corporate? (If yes, date, what are the names (s) of person (s) or company being sued.) Do you have professional liability insurance? Please can I have a certificate of insurance issued by the operator that indicates the amount of insurance? Insurance agent can fax to your office.
-? Can I have a copy of your client list both previous clients and current clients? If they are a reputable service that will gladly give you a list of some of their customers so that you can call and ask questions. Back at least three years.
-? Do you provide supervision of works was written during my building process and when I finish building a house?

In a meeting with each service to build a house with a good record to make sure that you can go home and compare to each other carefully. Comparing apples to apples. Try to be as objective as possible. Some services do not mind their tape recordings of meetings and telephone conversations. Save the file hard copies of all e-mail.

Oil falls to near $99 as US debt talks stall (AP)

SINGAPORE ? Oil prices fell to near $99 a barrel Monday in Asia amid investor concern that the lack of an agreement among U.S. lawmakers to raise the country's debt limit could trigger a default and damage the global economy.

Benchmark oil for September delivery was down 81 cents to $99.06 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude rose 74 cents to settle at $99.87 on Friday.

In London, Brent crude slid 60 cents to $118.07 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Talks stalled during the weekend as an Aug. 2 deadline looms for Congress to raise the government's $14.3 trillion debt limit. Without action by that date, the Treasury will be unable to pay all its bills, which could lead to a debt default and undermine the global economy.

Republican and Democratic leaders plan to present government spending and debt proposals later Monday.

"We believe that a last-minute stopgap deal will be reached, averting worst-case outcomes," Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in a report. "But it will fail to provide a credible long-term fiscal solution or lift rating agency concerns."

Bank of America said rating agencies will likely cut the U.S. credit rating to AA from AAA by the end of the year.

In other Nymex trading in September contracts, heating oil fell 2.0 cents to $3.12 a gallon while gasoline slid 1.5 cents at $3.08 a gallon. Natural gas futures for August delivery advanced 1.5 cents at $4.41 per 1,000 cubic feet.

if Pool is a sport, then define "sport' - Today, 12:16 PM

It seems that too many people who participate in competitive, physical, recreational activities become peeved at the idea of their
game being excluded as a sport.

The most important aspect to my definition of a sport is quite simple,

any game requiring the simultaneous attempt of your opponent(s) to prevent your progress...obviously there would be other requirements as that definition alone would qualify Video Games and other such competitions...but that's the gist...

Football, Basketball, Hockey, Soccer, Boxing, Wrestling etc...would constitute classic examples.

These types of games introduce a level of dynamics and psychology that are simply not present elsewhere.

I believe it is very difficult to understand these concepts unless you have played such games at a relatively high level and/or have
studied sporting competitions of many types over many years.

It is also my belief that these games are the most difficult of all requiring overall skill levels which dwarf those skills required to compete in other games, and generally speaking, the participants of which are derived from the deepest talent pools available.

Billiards obviously would not qualify under my definition,

nor would other games which are most often considered sports
such as Track and Field events, Swiw races, Gymnastics, and many more which in my view fall under the category of "competitions" requiring a certain level of athleticism

I welcome all input (except from bowlers)

Just because there aren't sweaty bodies rubbing against each other doesn't mean it isn't a sport. I've played college sports, and nothing compares to the athleticism it takes to play pool.

Most of the popular sports have similar objectives. In pool, you are trying to project an object at another object, to project it at another object. The execution is what makes it a sport.

On a very basic level, it looks like a small table compared to something like a soccer field, but the table itself, is massive.

Your definition would also exclude golf which I think is the most difficult "sport" on the planet. It's true you don't have bodies banging into each other but golf at a high level requires tremendous physical and mental stamina. Think about a sport where you can play almost perfectly for 63 holes and then blow the entire tournament on one bad swing.

I'm not sure whether pool could be considered a sport but it is certainly a very challenging and beautiful game. It is underrated and under appreciated because it takes someone with a fair amount of knowledge of the game to understand the skill required.

Just IMO...

I don't define words, I let other people do it:

dictionary.com:

Quote:

an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
I think long sessions on the table constitutes a certain level of "athletic activity."

Miriam-Webster is even more permissive:

Quote:

Definition of SPORT
1
a : a source of diversion : recreation b : sexual play c (1) : physical activity engaged in for pleasure (2) : a particular activity (as an athletic game) so engaged in
2
a : pleasantry, jest b : often mean-spirited jesting : mockery, derision
3
a : something tossed or driven about in or as if in play b : laughingstock
4
a : sportsman b : a person considered with respect to living up to the ideals of sportsmanship <a good sport> <a poor sport> c : a companionable person
Comparing any two sports is like comparing apples and oranges. I don't know why we bother. There's room enough in the world for all of them.
Every generation laughs at the old fashions, but follows religiously the new. -- Henry David Thoreau

I've played college sports, and nothing compares to the athleticism it takes to play pool.

Perhaps we need a way to separate a game from a sport. - Today, 03:28 PM

perhaps, by defining the difference between a game and a sport would be a good start. ie all sports are not games and all games are not sports.

I don't define words, I let other people do it:

dictionary.com:

I think long sessions on the table constitutes a certain level of "athletic activity."

Miriam-Webster is even more permissive:

Just a note about dictionaries. Dictionaries are sociological reports--they don't offer prescriptive or authoritative definitions for words, they simply report on actual usage. It is how a word is actually used within a linguistic community that determines what a dictionary reports as its definition. This is why what we think of as a word's meaning can change over time.

We got up early to do stretches on the tracks and exercises. Then we did laps because bobby came late. Then bobby would miss by a few seconds and we did more laps. Bobby came on time sometimes. I hate Bobby and coach. Sometimes it was fun when we scrimmaged, but most of pre-season was endurance training.

"You're as strong as our weakest link, guys"---coach

Then we hit the weights after training every other day for an hour. Yip we had boyish figures for the entire summer, then it goes away.

Training for pool--Once you're there, it's never gone. Those guys are still beasts.

Sex can be a sport, can't it? Also, I'm calling bs for giving bowling a free pass.

If this were a poll, I'd vote yes for billiards being a sport. However, the label is not that important.

You could also call it gambling, thereapy, recreation, whatever.

Book Review ? Madre: Perilous Journeys with a Spanish Noun by Liza ...

Liza Bakewell takes us where we may never have thought to go:? Down Mexico?s dusty back roads and cobblestone alleys, across neighborhood plazas lined with madre-derrogatory grafitti, through bustling markets, in a high speed car zig-zagging the wrong way down a one-way street, in provocative conversation with wise and deferential men, sequestered on the coast of Maine deep in contemplation, in lively debate with feminists, and befuddled and amused by encounters with people at all social and economic levels, including one?s own children.

Madre: Perilous Journeys with a Spanish Noun is not your everyday discussion about Mexico ? her culture, history, politics, women?s issues (and men?s, too), language, social structure, and how a people come to define and understand self. ?Yet it includes all of this! ?Bakewell?s premise is that language informs culture and vice versa. ? After reading this book, I understand and agree.? It opened my eyes.? Mexico is an idiomatic maze and ?madre? plunges us into the cultural and linguistic depths, revealing the mysteries and idiosyncracies of this most beloved and maligned noun. ?And, this most beloved and maligned country!

Some have described this book as a ?memoir,? and in some limited respect that is true.? Yet it is much more than that because the academic discussion (Bakewell is a professor of linguistic anthropology at Brown University) about the etymology of ?madre? prevails throughout.? But the book is flavored with slang, the vernacular, curse words, and romance. ?It describes her personal and professional quest to understand this most complex of Spanish nouns. ?It is human, engaging and real.

Most importantly, this book is entertaining, witty, clear and insightful.? It is a must-read for anyone who is thinking about visiting Mexico or who is living there.? Understanding the culture helps one enjoy the travel, and this will definitely bring you enjoyment before or during your stay.

Bakewell examines what the word ?madre? conjures up in Mexican society, and how it defines manhood and womanhood.? She takes us on a journey to explore gender roles, relationships, customs, traditions, church doctrine, and stereotypes.? The perilous journey is a metaphor, I believe, for the evolution of the word ? one small, simple word now infused with powerful emotion: manhood, womanhood, honor, obedience, pride, machismo, ?fight to the death,? and identity, plus all that is disparaging, insulting and base.

I love Bakewell?s discussion about the dualities and conflicts of Mexican identity and womanhood as exemplified by ?The Malinche? and her alter-ego counterpart, Dona Marina. ?They are one and the same woman, the first ?bad and forbidden? and the second ?baptized, good and pure.?? I see this drama danced out every year in the Danza de la Pluma that reenacts the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs.? Through this description, we come to understand who is the whore and who is the virgin, the themes that recur in the recesses of the language and icons hanging from every rear view mirror.

Bakewell explores the mixed messages and signals, expected behaviors, and role definitions for women and what constitutes femininity.? ?She describes Malinche, the translator for Cortes, and how her name became synonymous with traitor and betrayal. An indigenous woman from the southern coast of Mexico enslaved since childhood, passed from one tribal group to another, she was given to Cortes by her captors.? She was multilingual because of her circumstances.? Yet, she was redefined during the 1857 revolution as the antithesis of the good Mexican woman.? Mexican feminists are branded as Malinchistas.

Madre is about paternal creation and the power of the church to define and control.? It explores the subtle meaning of Virgin and Eve, and what constitutes purity.? The dilemma of madre in Mexico, according to Bakewell, is that the church believes the bride, once married is Eve, not the Virgin, and vulnerable to all the transgressions put before her.? Like Eve, Malinche was the mother of the first mestizo (indigenous Indian and Spanish blend), child of Cortes.? While Eve listened to the snake, Malinche listened to Cortes, betraying her people.

I imagine Liza Bakewell asked me to review this book because of my association with Oaxaca and love for Mexico.? In 2009, she spent the year there on sabbatical as a single mom with her twin daughters finishing up the manuscript in preparation for publication.? She talks about it being a warm, welcoming, safe and nurturing place for herself and her young children where she could bring her madre journey to a close.

Here, while she wrote, she also discovered that the liberal revolutionaries of 1857 ? Benito Juarez, Melchor Ocampo, and Justo Sierra ? politically reinterpreted what it meant to be a woman in Mexico. ?In their endeavor to liberate Mexico from the stranglehold of the Catholic church they replaced one set of padres for another.

Ocampo, in his ?Epistle,? defined the virtues of woman to be ?self-abnegation, beauty, compassion, shrewdness and tenderness, and must give and shall always give her husband obedience, affability, attention, comfort, advice and treat him with reverence due to the person who supports and defends us.?? Ocampo?s ?Epistle? became required reading at state civil marriage ceremonies? until 2007, when Mexican feminists asked individual?states to replace it.? Most have, but Oaxaca has not. ?The Epistle outlines perfection and impossible expectations for women to achieve.

The quest for the meaning of ?Madre? was not a straight path.? Just like the taxi driver zigzagging the wrong way down a one-way street, ?Madre? the book takes one turn and then another, to describe how ?madre? the word came to include derogatory meanings in the Mexican Spanish language.? It caused me to sit up and take notice about our own gender slurs and how we casually use them until they become embedded in the vernacular and we are no longer conscious of the meaning.

Just as you are beginning to think that you understand, Bakewell starts a discussion about the articles ?el? and ?la? and ?los.?? Spanish is organized by the system of la and el,? she says. ?If you are confused about which article to use, consider? el amor (love), el sexo (sex), el matrimonio (marriage), el prenado (pregnancy), el embarazo (pregnancy), el parto (childbirth) and el nacimiento (birth).? Why are these words ?masculine?? she asks.??? A friend of Bakewell?s who studied Indo-European languages, traces it to the concern about descent lines ? the patrilineage.?? Culture and language are powerful padres.

Finally, Bakewell asks us to consider the origins of madre and padre.? She delves into the sounds of mmmmmm and ppppppp.?? MMMMMmadre.??? PPPPPPPPpadre. ?She takes us to the very essence of birth, identity, survival and continuity.? She describes the mmmm sound as internal, humming, soothing, nurturing and nourishing.? Pppppppppadre is the force of spitting out, putting one?s imprimatur in the world, the first attempt at aggressiveness for what we must do to make our way as human beings.? One is internal and the other external, almost synonymous with how our bodies and reproductive organs are purposed. ??She describes how the sound origins across languages and cultures are consistent.? Fascinating. Try these sounds and you?ll see what I mean.

Anyone who travels to or lives in Mexico, studies Latin American culture, history, art, Spanish language, or anything related MUST read this book.? Furthermore, there are no madre insults in Italy and very few in Columbia, Chile and Argentina.

Madre IS made in Mexico.

And, if you want to know the expletives, you?ll have to read the book! ?They are plentiful.
