Borghese Treasures Return to Rome

December 29, 2011, 6:00 am By KATIE PARLA

When Napoleon acquired 695 ancient statues from the Borghese family collection in 1807, flabbergasted contemporaries called the act ?an indelible shame.? The collection was born two centuries earlier when Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V, made it his life?s work to bring together the masterpieces available to him. He assembled more than 2,000 pieces, including antique statues, sculptures by Bernini and canvases by Raphael, Caravaggio and Titian.

The collection?s heir, Camillo Borghese, was pressured to sell the most precious ancient statues to his brother-in-law, Napoleon. They were shipped to the Mus?e Napol?on in Paris, today known as the Louvre.

For the first time in nearly 200 years, 65 works will return to? the Galleria Borghese in Rome for the exhibition ?The Borghese Family and Antiquity,? which runs through April 9, 2012. Using 18th- and 19th-century drawings and texts as references, the curators have displayed the pieces as they were before their removal to Paris.

Among the masterpieces displayed are the Borghese Vase, a neo-Attic vessel standing nearly six feet high, carved with Dionysian scenes, the Sleeping Hermaphrodite restored by Gianlorenzo Bernini; and the charming Hellenistic Baroque-style sculpture of a Cupid Astride a Centaur. The exhibition is spread over both floors of the Galleria Borghese. Reservations are necessary.

Columbus Voyage Tied to Syphilis Spread? (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 28 (HealthDay News) -- A new examination of the origin of syphilis supports the theory that the sexually transmitted disease was carried to Europe aboard Christopher Columbus' ships as they sailed home from the New World.

The disease was not spread through sexual contact at the time, but adapted to survive once it got to Europe, Emory University researchers say.

"Syphilis has been around for 500 years," study co-leader Molly Zuckerman, a former Emory graduate student who is now an assistant professor at Mississippi State University, said in an Emory news release. "People started debating where it came from shortly afterwards, and they haven't stopped since. It was one of the first global diseases, and understanding where it came from and how it spread may help us combat diseases today."

After analyzing skeletal evidence in 54 published reports, the researchers found that syphilis did not exist in Europe until after Columbus' historic voyage to the New World in 1492. They said that most of the skeletal material lacked characteristics that would meet standard diagnostic criteria for chronic syphilis, such as small holes on the skull and long bones.

It appears that skeletons previously considered evidence of syphilis in Europe before Columbus' trip were dated incorrectly because of seafood consumption, which would have altered the collagen levels of the skeletons, the researchers said.

Their appraisal is published in the Yearbook of Physical Anthropology.

"This is the first time that all 54 of these cases have been evaluated systematically," said study co-author George Armelagos, an anthropologist at Emory, in the news release. "The evidence keeps accumulating that a progenitor of syphilis came from the New World with Columbus' crew and rapidly evolved into the venereal disease that remains with us today."

The researchers suggested someone sailing with Columbus brought Treponema -- the bacteria that causes syphilis -- to Europe. This type of bacteria also causes other diseases that are spread through skin-to-skin or oral contact in tropical climates. Their theory is that the bacteria mutated into the sexually transmitted form to survive in the cooler and more sanitary conditions of Europe.

"In reality, it appears that venereal syphilis was the byproduct of two different populations meeting and exchanging a pathogen," Zuckerman said. "It was an adaptive event, the natural selection of a disease, independent of morality or blame."

The researchers said more study is needed to confirm their findings. "The origin of syphilis is a fascinating, compelling question," Zuckerman said. "The current evidence is pretty definitive, but we shouldn't close the book and say we're done with the subject. The great thing about science is constantly being able to understand things in a new light."

Injured model is ?making remarkable strides?

While Lauren Scruggs continued to make a remarkable recovery after colliding with an airplane propeller, a large group of supporters gathered Tuesday night to raise money for her medical bills and speak about her indomitable spirit.

The 23-year-old model and fashion blogger from the Dallas area had her left hand severed, suffered shoulder and head injuries, and eventually had her left eye removed by a team of 15 doctors after accidentally walking in darkness into a still-spinning plane propeller on Dec. 3. She had been taking a trip with a pilot friend, Curt Richmond, to see Christmas lights in the Dallas area and was believed to be moving to the front of the plane to thank him when she walked into the propeller.

Story: Injured model loses left eye, will wear prosthesis

In just over three weeks since the accident, the girl affectionately known as ?Lo?? is already walking, talking, eating her favorite foods and doing numerous other activities on her own as she undergoes a painful rehabilitation process at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Her family has been regularly updating her progress on the site CaringBridge.org.

?Remarkable strides?
?Lo is making remarkable strides!?? her mother, Cheryl Scruggs, wrote on Monday. ?Her spirit is incredible. She's positive, hungry and cheery! Her appetite is very healthy, even though she is still taking lots of pain medication.??

A benefit was held Tuesday night at Sambucco 360 in Plano, Texas, for the Lauren Scruggs Hope Fund, which has been set up by her family to help defray the cost of her medical bills. The final figure has not been tallied yet, but so far at least $10,000 was raised from the event, which featured a silent auction with items donated by local businesses.

Ford Celebrates 100th UK Anniversary with Haute Couture Fashions

Ford shoot NEF 3.done 799x1024 Ford Celebrates 100th UK Anniversary with Haute Couture Fashions

It looks like more and more fashion designers are taking to auto parts instead of traditional fabrics for inspiration when it comes to haute couture. Only a few weeks ago we reported on the collaboration between?Lexus and Vogue. The concept of that collaboration was for select designers to use parts of the Lexus CT hybrid and create high fashion pieces. Well it looks like Ford has traveled down the same road.

In honor of Ford?s 100th?anniversary in the U.K., a Scottish designer named Judy Clark (who used to work under Alexander McQueen) has designed an Edwardian-style gown made from tweed, leather, lace, spray paint and silk chiffon ? along with assorted components from a 2012 Ford Focus.

Then there is jewelry designer Katherine Hawkins who crafted special pieces for the occasion as well. Her Ford collection includes an ornate necklace made from dials, buttons, springs and instrument panel switches. All of the parts are also derived from a 2012 Ford Focus.

Interestingly enough, both participating designers had no idea what the other was creating, yet in the end both pieces ended up complimenting each other perfectly.? Ironically though, designer Katherine Hawkins has no idea what the names are of the parts she used, since she doesn?t drive. Meanwhile, Judy Clark details her work on her blog and it is definitely worth checking out.

New York-based consumer products maker Wiesner eyes India

New York-based Wiesner Products Inc (WPI) has set up its subsidiary in India to sell a range of consumer items such as footwear, hosiery, accessories, apparel and home goods at retail stores here.

Wiesner Worldwide Kreations (WWK) Pvt Ltd, the Indian arm of WPI, has already tied up with leading retail stores in the country like Hypercity, Home Centre and Westside, as it looks to strengthen operations in the country.

"We have set up an office in India with a team of 15 people and are targeting big retail chains along with a large number of distributors. India is the third country of operations for Wiesner after the US and China," WWK Vice-President South East Asia Bhavna Jha told PTI.

She said Wiesner Products Inc that has operations in the US for over 40 years with an annual turnover of around $ 250 million, is looking to offer its international products to consumers in India.

Asked about the company's expectations from the Indian market Jha said, "We want to go slow and steady here."

Besides selling its products in India, Wiesner is also looking at local sourcing.

"All the sourcing for the US and China markets is done from China and Philippines at present. In China, the company co-owns a few manufacturing units and has exclusive sourcing arrangements with others. Going ahead we will consider sourcing from India also," she added.

Wiesner Products Inc makes and sells branded products, licensed items and private labels.

It also holds licenses for merchandise of brands such as Aerosoles, Nickelodeon, MGA, Marvel, The Sharper Image, WWE and Warner Brothers.

The company has design offices in New York and Shanghai, but is not considering to develop design capabilities in India, Jha added.

Islamists kill dozens in Nigeria Christmas bombs (Reuters)

ABUJA (Reuters) ? Islamist militants set off bombs across Nigeria on Christmas Day - three targeting churches including one that killed at least 27 people - raising fears that they are trying to ignite sectarian civil war.

The Boko Haram Islamist sect, which aims to impose sharia law across the country, claimed responsibility for the three church bombs, the second Christmas in a row the group has caused mass carnage with deadly bombings of churches. Security forces also blamed the sect for two other blasts in the north.

St Theresa's Catholic Church in Madala, a satellite town about 40 km (25 miles) from the center of the capital Abuja, was packed when the bomb exploded just outside.

"We were in the church with my family when we heard the explosion. I just ran out," Timothy Onyekwere told Reuters. "Now I don't even know where my children or my wife are. I don't know how many were killed but there were many dead."

Hours after the first bomb, blasts were reported at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church in the central, ethnically and religiously mixed town of Jos, and at a church in northern Yobe state at the town of Gadaka. Residents said many were wounded in Gadaka, but there were no immediate further details.

A suicide bomber killed four security officials at the State Security Service in one of the other bombs, which struck the northeastern town of Damaturu, police said. Residents heard two loud explosions and gunfire in the town.

A Reuters reporter at the church near Abuja saw the front roof had been destroyed, as had several houses nearby. Five burnt out cars were still smouldering. There were scenes of chaos, as shocked residents stared at the wreckage in disbelief.

"Mass just ended and people were rushing out of the church and suddenly I heard a loud sound: 'Gbam!' Cars were in flames and bodies littered everywhere," Nnana Nwachukwu told Reuters.

Father Christopher Barde, Assistant priest of the church, said: "The officials who counted told me they have picked up 27 bodies so far."

Police cordoned off the area around the church. Thousands of furious youths set up burning road blocks on the highway from Abuja leading to Nigeria's largely Muslim north.

Police and the military tried to disperse them by firing live rounds into the air with tear gas.

"We are so angry," shouted Kingsley Ukpabi, as a queue of hooting vehicles lined up behind his flaming barrage.

ATTACKS INCREASE

Boko Haram - which in the Hausa language spoken in northern Nigeria means "Western education is sinful" - is loosely modelled on the Taliban movement in Afghanistan.

It has emerged as the biggest security threat in Nigeria, a country of 160 million split evenly between Christians and Muslims, who for the most part live side by side in peace.

Its low level insurgency used to be largely confined to northeastern Nigeria, but it has struck several parts of the north, center and the capital Abuja this year.

Last Christmas Eve, a series of bomb blasts around Jos killed 32 people, and other people died in attacks on two churches in the northeast.

At the church near Abuja, a wounded man whose legs were almost shattered to pieces by the blast was loaded onto a stretcher near an ambulance by security services.

"I'll survive," he said in a hushed voice.

The blast in Jos, a tinderbox of ethnic and sectarian tensions that sometimes sees deadly clashes between Muslims and Christians, was accompanied by a shooting spree by militants, who exchanged fire with local police, said Charles Ezeocha, special taskforce spokesman for Jos.

"We lost one policeman and we have made four arrests. I think we can use them to get more information and work on that," he said. Police found four other explosive devices in Jos, which they deactivated, he added.

President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south who is struggling to contain the threat of Islamist militancy, called the incidents "unfortunate" but said Boko Haram would "not be (around) forever. It will end one day."

The White House condemned "this senseless violence and tragic loss of life on Christmas Day."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also condemned the attacks and expressed his condolences "to the people of Nigeria and to the bereaved families."

"The Secretary-General calls once again for an end to all acts of sectarian violence in the country and reiterates his firm conviction that no objective sought can justify this resort to violence," a statement released by his office said.

North Korea To Be Center Of Japan-China Talks

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda arrives in Beijing on Sunday for talks focused on North Korea and promoting stability in the closed country after the death of Kim Jong Il.

Noda's first official visit to Beijing would normally have focused on bilateral issues, such as squabbles over islands claimed by both countries, but the death of Kim a little more than a week ago and the announcement of his son as the country's "supreme leader" has shifted the focus away from bilateral issues.

Noda is the first foreign leader to meet China's leaders since Kim's death and Japanese officials say he will emphasize the need to get stalled six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear program back on track.

Obama welcomes payroll tax deal (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama is welcoming a deal on extending a payroll tax cut and congratulating Congress for ending its "partisan stalemate."

The president issued a statement Thursday evening moments after House Speaker John Boehner announced that House Republicans were reversing course and accepting a two-month extension agreed to by the Senate and supported by the president.

Obama says the deal, which also extends unemployment benefits, is good news just in time for the holidays and the right thing to do for American families and the economy.

And he is thanking Americans who pressured Congress to get it done.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

President Barack Obama on Thursday chided House Republicans he said are holding up an extension of expiring payroll tax cuts, saying the debate is "about the American people."

To make his point, Obama was flanked at the White House by people who said they would be stretched thin financially if Congress failed to extend the cuts before the end of the year. If no deal is reached, the White House says a person making $50,000 a year would see a loss of about $40 per paycheck.

"Now there may be some folks in the House who refuse to vote for this compromise because they don't think 40 bucks is a lot of money," Obama said. "But anyone who knows how to stretch a budget knows that at the end of the week or the end of the month, $40 can make all the difference in the world."

In seeking to ratchet up pressure on Republicans for a deal, Obama reiterated his call for a two-month extension of the payroll tax cuts, a measure already agreed to by an overwhelming majority of Senators from both parties. He said the House GOP's refusal to sign on to the bipartisan deal was exactly why the American people have grown so frustrated with Washington.

"This is an issue where an overwhelming number of people in both parties agree," Obama said. "How can we not get that done? Has this place become so dysfunctional that even when people agree to things we can't do it? It doesn't make any sense. Enough is enough."

House Republicans say they oppose the two-month deal because it doesn't provide the public and businesses enough certainty. They've called on Obama and Senate Democrats to instead negotiate a full-year extension now.

Earlier Thursday, House Speaker John Boehner called Obama, their second conversation in as many days. The White House said Obama committed to immediately starting talks on a full-year deal if the House first passes the two-month extension. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has also urged the House to pass a short-term extension while starting work on the full-year deal.

Firefox 9 for Android makes tablet support official (video)

It's been a busy week over at Mozilla. Between releasing a new version of its desktop browser and then re-upping its search agreement with Google, we almost didn't notice a new version of Firefox for Android. Version 9 of the mobile browser marks the first time a tablet interface makes the jump from beta to the release channel, a scant four months after first seeing it in mockup form. For those unaware, that means a layout with tab previews when in landscape, which swap to a more traditional setup when rotated into portrait. Rounding out the update is a new action bar, quick access buttons and a faster start-up time, amongst other things. If that sounds like your beat, a video awaits after the break, while you get your download on at the source links below.

Search for missing Maine toddler goes inside home

Investigators on Thursday put up tape around the home of a 20-month-old girl who's been missing since last weekend as the search for her entered its sixth day.

But Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey insisted that Ayla Reynolds' disappearance remains a missing child case, that "everything remains open and we're not discounting anything."

Massey told reporters that the investigation is now focused on an expanded search of the house in a neighborhood of neatly kept tract homes.

"That is the last place Ayla was seen. So as you might, expect we're going to give a lot of attention to that particular house, looking for any clues where she might be or where it would help us to locate her," Massey said. "We need to go through that as thoroughly as we can, just like we do in any other investigation."

He said officials from the state attorney general's office, including criminal division chief William Stokes, were at the house, but that was just to give them an opportunity to look at the site.

"We're at a point where we thought it was appropriate for him to come in and just do a walk-through," Massey said.

Spokeswoman Brenda Kielty said the visit to Ayla's father's home by Stokes and Andrew Benson, another top homicide prosecutor, was "standard protocol." She declined further comment on the case.

The police chief played down the significance of yellow tape strung about the perimeter of the small property, saying it was "just an additional barrier" to secure the site. He said people shouldn't read too much into the presence of a state police incident command van parked there, saying it was for the convenience of technicians working at the site.

The investigation continued in other parts of the central Maine city, including at the airport where cadaver dogs were brought in, as well as streams and waterways. By Thursday, police had received more than 200 tips from the public, all of which were being followed up and some re-checked, the chief said.

Ayla was living with her father, Justin DiPietro, who reported her missing Saturday. DiPietro told police he last saw her when he put her to bed the previous night. He said she was wearing green pajamas with polka dots and the words "Daddy's Princess" on them. She also had a cast on her broken left arm.

Ayla ended up with her father after child welfare workers intervened while her mother, Trista Reynolds, checked herself into a 10-day rehabilitation program.

Her disappearance unleashed a flood of leads from a sympathetic public and a search by state and local police and game wardens in the central Maine city. The FBI also got involved.

While residents volunteered to help canvass neighborhoods, police checked out trash bins across the city and FBI agents knocked on doors. Officials even went so far as to drain a stream a few blocks from DiPietro's home so wardens could get a better look, both from the ground and from an airplane.

Cadaver dogs were searching an area in the woods near the Waterville airport on Thursday, WCSH-TV reported.

Ayla ended up with her father after child welfare workers intervened while her mother, Trista Reynolds, checked herself into a 10-day rehabilitation program.

Reynolds, who completed the rehab, had filed court papers that she hoped would lead to the return of her daughter. The filing came the day before Ayla was last seen.

Video: Search continues for missing Maine toddler (on this page)

"I want to see her face, I want to see her eyes, I want to feel her touch," Reynolds told reporters. "I want to tell her I love her, and I feel like I can't protect her."

Searchers have looked through trash bins and lowered portions of Messalonskee Stream in the city, looking for signs of Ayla. The FBI continued Wednesday to go door-to-door in a "knock and talk" canvassing effort.

Massey said the number of leads offered by citizens grew by more than 60 in a day to nearly 165 by Wednesday. By Thursday, the number had grown to nearly 200.

Tuesday night, DiPietro addressed the public for the first time, saying in a statement he had "no idea what happened to Ayla, or who is responsible."

DiPietro released the statement through the Waterville police, saying his family and friends will do "everything we can to assist in this investigation and get Ayla back home."

Reynolds said she began to question Ayla's care after the girl suffered a broken arm, which officials said happened in an accidental fall. She said that she and her family encouraged child welfare agents to check on Ayla, but that they didn't follow through.

The Maine Department of Health and Human Services has had no comment on the request. Confidentiality laws bar the child welfare agency from even confirming whether it's working with an individual or family.

Massey said DiPietro and Reynolds continue to cooperate with police.

An Amber Alert, which lets the public know about an abducted child, wasn't declared, and no manhunt is under way. State police say the case didn't fit the criteria for an Amber Alert because Ayla was reported missing about 12 hours after being last seen, and there was no vehicle and no suspect.

Samsung Captivate Glide review

The QWERTY slider hasn't exactly gone the way of the dinosaur, but it's definitely approaching giant panda status. That is to say, it's become rare for a major device manufacturer to output anything other than candybar touchscreen smartphones. And why not? Slimmer, faster, beastlier is the mobile motto as of late and that's precisely what consumers seem to gravitate towards. But for diehard fans of tactile feedback, Samsung's birthed the Captivate Glide, a handset that marries the best of both form factors. Sitting just below its high-end brethren, Sammy's 4-incher runs along AT&T's 21Mbps HSPA+ network and bundles an 800 x 480 Super AMOLED display with a dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a 1,650mAh battery, WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, a 1.3MP front-facing camera and an 8MP rear camera capable of 720p video capture. At $150 on a two-year contract, it's just half a Benjamin short of the top-tier, LTE-capable HTC Vivid. With that small of a price divide, you have to wonder: is the downgrade really worth it for the Captivate Glide's (comparatively) slower speeds and physical buttons? Are you willing to trade-in thin and sleek for messaging convenience and a bit of bulk? Follow on past the break as we deliver the answers to those burning questions.

Russia seizes Iran-bound radioactive material (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russia's customs service said Friday it had seized radioactive sodium-22, an isotope that is used in medical equipment but has no weapons use, from the luggage of a passenger planning to fly from Moscow to Tehran.

The service said in a statement that the material could be obtained only "as a result of a nuclear reactor's operations" but did not say when it had been discovered at Moscow's Sheremetyevo international airport.

The material triggered an alarm in the airport's radiation control system and a luggage search led to the discovery of 18 pieces of the radioactive metal packed in individual steel casings, it said.

The passenger boarded the plane for Tehran and left Russia, the customs service said. It added that the passenger was Iranian national. Russian law enforcement agencies opened criminal investigation into the incident.

Sodium-22 can be used for calibrating nuclear detectors and in medical equipment, nuclear experts said.

"There is no weapons aspect to this (material)," said Research director Lars-Erik De Geer of the Swedish Defense Research Institute.

Tension is rising between Western powers and Iran after a United Nations nuclear watchdog report last month that said Tehran appeared to have worked on designing a nuclear weapon, and that secret research to that end may be continuing.

Russia, which built Iran's first nuclear power station, has said it might help Tehran construct more atomic plants.

There was no immediate comment from the International Atomic Energy Agency on the incident and whether Russian authorities had reported it to the Vienna-based U.N. body.

Searching for Spain's stolen infants

By Kate Snow and Jessica Hopper
Rock Center

Luis Vega?is on a mission to meet every man born in Madrid, Spain on Nov. 20, 1977.? That's the day doctors told?him that?his baby son was stillborn, but?he and his wife, Ines,?believe their child was in fact stolen from the hospital.

?We have a son somewhere out there,? Luis Vega said.

The Vega family isn?t alone in believing their child was stolen.? This year, more than a thousand families have come forward with claims that they were victims of baby trafficking committed by a variety of networks from the 1940s until as recently as the early 1990s.

Armed with a list of the 61 names of boys born in Madrid on the same day he lost his son, Vega is making calls and knocking on doors because he is convinced his son is alive.

?What we just want only, is to tell him, ?You have not been abandoned,?? Vega said.

For Vega, the memory of his son?s birth is still fresh. He and his wife went to a hospital in Madrid on a Sunday in November 1977.? They were already parents to one son and believed they were expecting just one more child when they received surprising news: they were having twins.

?I started to think, I got two,? Vega said.? ?So, I was absolutely excited, astonished.?

The excitement faded when doctors came to Vega and told him that one of the twins, a boy, was dead.?

?I felt frozen,? he said.?

Vega said the doctor told him, ?I recommend you not see him.?

At that time in Spain, doctors were authority figures who were virtually unapproachable.? Vega simply didn?t question that the doctor was telling the truth.?

The doctor told Vega that the hospital would handle the burial of the baby boy. His wife, Ines, was under anesthesia and was unaware of what had happened. Vega ultimately told her the sad news.

The couple comforted one another and did their best to move on with their lives, raising their newborn daughter, Ana, and their older son.

Every year on Ana?s birthday, Luis and Ines talked about her twin, the boy they lost.

This January, Vega and his wife were eating lunch and watching TV when a news report stopped them cold and made them think that the son they?d lost 33 years ago might actually be alive.?

An unbelievable story was exploding in the press, allegations that for decades, organized networks stole newborn babies from their mothers and sold the babies to other families. On January 27, more than 250 families filed cases with Spain?s attorney general. That number has since risen to nearly 1500 cases.

Vega and his wife requested documentation from the cemetery where they believed their son had been buried and sent a letter to the hospital where he had been born. Cemetery officials told them that no one had been buried at the cemetery with their family?s last name.

When Vega told his daughter, Ana, that her twin brother might be alive after all, she was shocked.

?I spent like a month with a knot in my stomach.? I couldn?t eat,? she said.

Ana Vega created a blog to help in the search for her lost twin.

?We are not looking, you know, for revenge,? she said.? ?We just want to find him and that?s it and to, if he wants to, you know, be part of our family, great.? If he doesn?t, well, you know, that?s his choice as well.?

If anyone is responsible for prompting the discovery of this dark part of Spain?s history, it is documentary filmmaker and author Montse Armengou.? Armengou was among the very first to report on systematic baby stealing.

?In Spain, from a long period of time, from the ?40s until ?80s as a minimum, we can talk about children that were kidnapped from their families, from their mothers,? Armengou said.

It started as a form of political repression under Fascist dictator Francisco Franco. Franco seized power during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. Under his leadership, the government would remove children from mothers who were political prisoners and give them to families who supported the regime.

?[In] the beginning, [it] was a political repression and after became a moral and ideological repression against single mothers.? You have to know that during the Franco?s regime, the power of Catholic Church was very, very strong,? Armengou said.

Doctors, often with the help of nuns, would tell young single mothers that their child was dead or force single mothers to give their children up for adoption. At the time, single young women were still considered minors until they were 26 years old.

?It?s impossible to ask for help because you are nothing,? Armengou said.? ?You are only a single mother. That means that you are nothing, you are garbage, you are waste.?

The political and moral repression became a booming business with families paying the equivalent of what it would cost for an apartment, in order to obtain a child.

For those who believe they are victims of the now defunct organized networks of baby stealing, the legal process has been frustratingly slow.? Despite the hundreds of cases filed, no one has been charged with any crime.

?We?re moving as fast as we can.? We?re dealing with cases that are incredibly difficult,? said prosecutor Pedro Crespo who has been tasked by Spain?s attorney general to coordinate the hundreds of official investigations across Spain.

Crespo said that the passage of time, incomplete records and the fact that many of those involved are already dead has hampered the investigations.

For some, like the Vega family, the doctor they hold responsible for stealing their child is still alive.

?This bastard has taken our life,? said an emotional Luis Vega.

Vega recently became the president of S.O.S. Bebes Robados?Madrid, one of the organizations helping those who think they might be victims.

Vega said that he doesn?t expect he?ll ever truly get justice, but hopes ultimately he?ll find his son.

?I?m convinced,? Vega said.? ?Otherwise, why [am I] going to fight?I?m fighting for this and everything.?

Editor?s Note: Kate Snow?s full report, ?Stolen At Birth,? airs on Rock Center with Brian Williams on Monday, Dec. 19 at 10 p.m./9 c. ?

Bomb blast kills 2, wounds 1 in Philippines (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? A homemade bomb killed two men when it exploded Thursday on the motorcycle they were riding in a southern town, police said. A bystander was wounded.

Investigators were trying to determine whether the men were innocent victims or were carrying the bomb that went off accidentally in Maguindanao province's Datu Odin Sinsuat township, provincial police chief Senior Superintendent Marcelo Pintac said.

An earlier report said the bomb was fashioned from a mortar round, but Pintac said a bomb squad was still trying to reconstruct the device from debris recovered at the scene.

Pintac said the bomb exploded as the men were passing the home of a provincial official who was killed in a car bombing several months ago.

Authorities have blamed previous bombings in the region on Muslim rebels, militants, rival politicians and extortion gangs.

Carbon capture and storage gets a clean bill of health

IT DOESN'T look like we will stop putting out carbon dioxide, but we might at least be able to bury it.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) could slow climate change by locking up CO2. There are concerns that the gas could leak out of deep geological storage, but two of the largest pilot projects have been given a clean bill of health.

As well as adding to climate change, CO2 leaks would be toxic. In January a family living near the Weyburn-Midale CO2 Project in Saskatchewan, Canada, found unusually high levels of CO2 in their farm's water. An independent report by the International Performance Assessment Centre for Geologic Storage of CO2 has found the gas did not come from the storage reservoir.

Stuart Gilfillan of the University of Edinburgh, UK, who took part in the investigation, has found that CO2 leaking from deep underground has higher levels of helium than CO2 from other sources (International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control, DOI: 10.1016/j.ijggc.2011.08.008). That means leaks from storage facilities can be easily identified. The Canadian water samples contained normal levels of helium.

In Australia, the CO2CRC project stored 65,000 tonnes of CO2in a depleted gas field in 2008 and 2009. So far, it reports no signs of leaks (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1107255108).
