Tuthilltown Spirits wins state award - Dowd on Drinks - Bill Dowd ...

GARDINER ? Tuthilltown Spirits, New York State?s first licensed whiskey distillery since Prohibition, has been awarded 2011 ?Exporter of the Year? honors by the New York State Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for its success at selling its locally-produced spirits internationally.

Owners Brian Lee and Ralph Erenzo began production in 2003 at the old Tuthilltown Gristmill in this Ulster County community. They specialize in small-batch spirits distilled from Hudson Valley and other New York State grains, fruits and other products, using hand-crafting, hand-bottling and hand-labeling processes.

The company began exporting to increase its visibility and cash flow in 2007 and currently sells to Australia, France and Switzerland. Future plans include Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic and Asia. Tuthilltown has a relationship with W.T. Grant and Sons, an independent Scottish company that distills whisky and other spirits.

Tuthilltown was selected from nominees from SBDC?s network of 24 regional centers in the state. SUNY Ulster is the sponsor of the regional SBDC that serves Dutchess, Orange, Schoharie, Ulster, Greene, Delaware and Sullivan counties.
