A former lifeguard at the Sandwich Community Pool has pleaded innocent in Barnstable District Court to six counts of statutory rape.
Michael Grundman, 20, was released on $2,500 cash bail and ordered to stay away from the alleged victim, a Sandwich High School student. He is due back in court Jan. 20 for a pre-trial conference, according to court records. Grundman is represented by Bourne defense attorney Drew Segadelli.
Sandwich police arrested Grundman on Dec. 22 when he arrived for work at the pool where he is no longer employed. Police did not disclose the arrest in the department?s daily log. Other area police departments handle rape arrests and follow up investigations in various public ways, but detectives and assigned spokesmen notably do not discuss details.
Bourne police routinely do not discuss rape investigations involving minors. There were 25 rape investigations in Bourne during 2011.
Police department logs in Massachusetts are public records. Arrests are considered to be part of the public record.
The community pool is located at Sandwich High School.
The arrest of Grundman came the same week that Plymouth police arrested an Upper Cape Cod Regional High School staffer, who allegedly raped a UCT student, aged 15, at the Lyman Preserve on the Bourne-Plymouth man. The staffer, who faces three rape charges, was terminated from his UCT employment.
