LinkedIn's 4Q gets rave reviews from investors

(AP) ? Online professional-networking service LinkedIn's fourth-quarter performance added another line to its sterling resume as a public company.

The results announced Thursday extended LinkedIn Corp.'s uninterrupted streak of exceeding analysts' projections for both earnings and revenue. It marked the seventh consecutive quarter since LinkedIn's May 2011 IPO that the company has pulled that off, to the delight of investors.

The run of pleasant surprises is one of the reasons that LinkedIn's stock has tripled from its initial public offering price of $45. The shares surged $11.71, or 9.4 percent, to $135.80 in extended trading after the numbers came out.

Besides a 66 percent increase in earnings from the previous year, the latest quarter was highlighted by an influx of 15 million accounts to propel LinkedIn's total membership beyond 200 million. Visitors to LinkedIn's website also viewed 67 percent more pages than the previous year, an indication that the company's efforts to add more business news and career tips from top business executives are paying off.

Wall Street's embrace of LinkedIn contrasts with the cold response given to other Internet services that have gone public during the past few years. Most of them are trading below their IPO prices. The most notable is Facebook Inc., whose stock is worth about 25 percent less than it was when it made its market debut in May.

Although both run websites devoted to connecting people with common interests, LinkedIn and Facebook are targeting different audiences. Facebook focuses mostly on letting friends and family share good times and swap stories, while LinkedIn concentrates on helping people advance their careers and helping companies fill jobs.

Facebook, which is based in Menlo Park, is the larger of the two services, with more than 1 billion active users and $5.1 billion in revenue last year. LinkedIn, which is based in Mountain View, Calif., has 202 million accountholders and revenue of $972 million in 2012.

But LinkedIn is growing more quickly, partly because it's less dependent on advertising than Facebook and most Internet services. In the fourth quarter, advertising accounted for 27 percent of LinkedIn's revenue. The remainder comes from various tools that it sells to help recruit workers and glean more insights from the information that its users post on its website.

Reflecting its belief that the member data are becoming increasingly valuable, LinkedIn said Thursday that it intends to raise some prices this year. Setting up a member profile remains free. The price increase reflects the additional information that the company has accumulated as its membership has more than doubled in less than two years, according to Steve Sordello, LinkedIn's chief financial officer. The company provided no specifics on the increases.

LinkedIn earned $11.5 million, or 10 cents per share, during the final three months of last year. That compared to $6.9 million, or 6 cents per share, a year earlier.

If not for the costs of employee stock compensation and certain other charges, LinkedIn said it would have earned 35 cents per share. That was far above the average estimates of 19 cents per share among analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Revenue soared 81 percent from the previous year to $304 million ? about $24 million above analyst forecasts.

LinkedIn's revenue outlook for the current quarter and all of 2013 were roughly in line with analyst estimates, setting the stage for the company to clear those financial hurdles once again.

Management's forecast for annual revenue of $1.4 billion this year appears conservative, given that it would translate into an increase of about 45 percent from last year. In 2012, LinkedIn's annual revenue rose 86 percent.

"We are trying to utilize a prudent approach to year-over-year growth," Sordello told analysts during an analyst conference call.

Firm Debevoise & Plimpton Terminates Trust and Estate Practice

Estate DisputeOne of the largest, prestigious, and traditional firms, Debevoise & Plimpton, has decided to terminate its trust and estate planning practice. The move surprised many in the legal field because of the firm has retained its strong partnership culture, especially because many firms have moved away from that school of thought to more of a bottom line approach.?Debevoise & Plimpton is the latest firm to make this move. Some in the industry believe that it is a result of a change in the profession. More specifically, it appear that the legal profession is becoming more of a business.

At one time, estate planning was considered to be a necessary and lucrative practice by corporate law firms, who would spend their efforts advising and planning for wealthy families. Now, estate planning has taken a secondary position behind the cash cow of corporate law firms today: "multibillion-dollar corporate transactions and high-stakes litigation." Furthermore, estate planning is not as profitable because they are not as work heavy as complex lawsuits or megamergers. Even with the trend, there are those that are resisting change. For example, "In 2011, seven trusts and estates lawyers from Weil, led by Carlyn S. McCaffrey, moved to McDermott Will & Emery, a firm with about 65 trusts and estate lawyers, one of the larger such practices." In addition, some claim that the argument that estate planning is not profitable just is not correct. The head of Katten's trust and estate practice argued that if well-integrated estate planning can produce lots of work for the firm.

Braxton's autistic son stars with her in new movie

NEW YORK (AP) ? Toni Braxton's autistic son makes his acting debut in her new Lifetime movie, "Twist of Faith," and could have had a bigger role, but the singer didn't want to put too much pressure on him.

"He was supposed to play my son initially but by the time we worked out the shooting schedule, school had started," Braxton said of 9-year-old Diezel. (She also has an 11-year-old named Denim.)

"Even though he's considered high functioning right now, he wasn't in the past, and that's why I thought him carrying the movie and trying to do the movie and tutoring would have been too much for him," the 45-year-old singer said.

Braxton decided he should take a smaller role.

"He was a little disappointed at first, but I think in the end, he's happy about the turnout," she said.

Braxton understands the pressure. Although she has had small acting roles and stars in the WE reality TV series, "Braxton Family Values," which has its season premiere March 14, she is the main star of "Twist of Faith" ? and that makes her nervous.

"I never had to carry anything before. It's a lot of work," she said of her role in the film, which debuts Saturday on Lifetime (8 p.m. EST).

"Singing is indigenous for me, but acting is not. I've had to work to prepare for it," said Braxton, adding later: "Be nice to me, guys! This is my first real acting debut! There are a few boo-boos. ... It's a lot more technical than I thought."

Braxton is better known for her Grammy-winning, multiplatinum singing career, which has netted classics like "Un-break My Heart" and "Breathe Again." She said she's working on an album with longtime collaborator Babyface called "Love, Marriage, Divorce." She's also doing a few shows here and there, but she suffers from lupus, an autoimmune disease, which prevents her from doing more. Recently, she was hospitalized for blood clots, but Braxton considers herself one of the "lucky ones" and is grateful she can still have a career.

"My doctors told me I would never be able to perform again," she said. "I'm very lucky that I'm still able to dabble in it a little bit."

Mole smells in stereo

Nostrils of unlovely mammal recognize slight differences in odors

By Tina Hesman Saey

Web edition: February 5, 2013

SMELLS GOOD

The common mole is blind and has a poor sense of touch, but it can smell in stereo. Each nostril receives slightly different scent cues that the animal uses to navigate toward its food, a new study finds.

Credit: K. Catania

The common mole may be homely but its nose is a wonder to behold.

The eastern American mole, also known as the common mole, tracks down an earthworm treat by recognizing the slightly different odor cues entering each nostril, neurobiologist Kenneth Catania of Vanderbilt University in Nashville reports online February 5 in Nature Communications.

The finding suggests that even though mole nostrils are separated by a fraction of a centimeter, each gets its own scent information that can guide an animal?s actions. ?It?s an elegant demonstration of what many people suspected,? says Peter Brunjes, a neuroscientist at the University of Virginia. Previous experiments with people and rats had reached contradictory conclusions regarding whether smell, like sight and hearing, is a bilateral sense.

Catania never expected the common mole, Scalopus aquaticus, to have uncommon abilities. ?I?ve described it as the unlucky, stupid cousin of the star-nosed mole,? he says. Star-nosed moles, Condylura cristata, have an incredible sense of touch in their tentacled schnozzes and are among the world?s fastest foragers. But compared with other mole species, the eastern American mole has a poor sense of touch. The animals also can?t see. Catania turned to common moles because he thought they would have a hard time finding food and could be tested against star-nosed moles in future experiments.

THE NOSE KNOWS

A common mole sniffs out a piece of food during a laboratory experiment.

But when he placed a common mole in a semicircular arena with a chopped up bit of earthworm as bait, he says, ?it would wiggle its nose around and go in a beeline toward the food.?

Since the moles? other senses are so bad, Catania wondered whether the animals locate their food by smell. He first plugged one of a mole?s nostrils with a short piece of plastic tubing. That caused the mole to veer off course in the direction of the open nostril. Next, Catania stuck small tubes into both nostrils and crossed the tubes so that the right nostril sniffed odors from the left side of the mole?s face and vice versa. The moles behaved as if they had gotten reversed directions to the food, searching to one side before finding the food or missing the earthworm treat entirely.

Catania?s discovery that crossing the nostrils? inputs confuses the animals is strong evidence that moles, and probably other mammals, engage in bi-nostril smelling, Brunjes says. If moles simply sniffed their way toward an ever-stronger scent, then crossing the tubes wouldn?t make a difference.? ?It?s kind of the perfect proof,? he says.

Moles may have evolved to precisely follow a scent trail because they have to dig for their food. ?Being off by half an inch could be hugely energetically expensive,? Catania says.

He is interested in studying whether star-nosed moles traded their sense of smell for better touch. He also wants to know how scent information is wired into the brains of common moles.

Vancouver oversupply of Homes is dangerous | M Rindia of Canada ...

The latest data on the housing market is out, and the sensation that it has stirred is revealing. Sample some of the talking points in this report: ?the sales figures for the last month represent the lowest figure in the last fifteen years; the total months of inventory ? the duration of time it would take to sell a housing unit compared to another base month ? hit double digits for the first time in twelve years. In spite of the preceding scenario real estate developers continue unabated putting up new housing units. A crisis beckons in Vancouver, the apt term for this crisis ? Vancouver oversupply of homes: http://www.realestatevancouver2010.com/homes/vancouver-west-homes/.

Vancouver homes may be overpriced

In a market economy, the trend is that that social control mechanism that Adam Smith referred to as the invisible hand (the price mechanism) will in its own way calibrate the market. Either the property developers are rudely ignoring the invisible hand (sic) or the effects of the looming market correction are yet to be felt. A mismatch between supply and demand (a mismatch tagged Vancouver oversupply of homes: http://www.realestatevancouver2010.com/homes/vancouver-west-south-granville-homes/) portends some interesting scenarios to the Vancouver housing market and to the economy at large.

The most obvious remedy will be that the pricing of the housing units will have to come down. Developers eager to dispose their properties to starve of baying creditors will offer fire sale prices to the market. Potential buyers, who will no doubt have smelt the blood, may hold back a bit resulting in further plummeting of prices. In this way will the market achieve equilibrium ? when the buyers and sellers converge at a common market price. The loser in the above scenario is obviously the developer.

The second possible scenario that a Vancouver oversupply of homes

The second possible reason is that creditors might get their fingers burned as the Vancouver real estate market corrects itself. This is on account of the fact that the lines of credit that might have been extended to developers will dry up ? because developers might be stuck with investments that are not moving on the Vancouver market. This is a scenario that affects the entire economy because it means that credit becomes more expensive to obtain and consequently growth of businesses is in many ways stifled. It has left many areas like this, in great disarray. This has the hallmarks of the Housing bubble experienced in the last decade but hopefully, the economy will not get to that point.

A Typical Vancouver home worth over $1millionThe third scenario that is the only bit of good news in this whole mess is that with a drop in the valuation of houses, individuals might just have an opportunity to own a house of their own at prices that are ?reasonable.? Reasonable being prices that are based on the market fundamentals as opposed to perception.

However way it plays out, one thing is certain, the Vancouver oversupply of homes scenario will have a set of winners and a set of losers. Although this is a sad reality, it is the proverbial house of cards that Capitalism stokes most fervently. All yours truly can say about the Vancouver oversupply of homes saga is this: Watch this space.
